To the north it borders the prefecture of Imathia, to the west with the prefecture of Kozani, to the south with the prefecture of Larissa, while to the east it is washed by the Gulf of Thermaikos.

The capital of the prefecture is Katerini, other towns are Litochoro and Aeginio. Of particular importance is the ancient city of Dion and its vast archaeological site.

In Pieria is Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece (2917 meters) and famous all over the world, as according to mythology, the 12 gods of Olympus, led by Zeus, lived here. Other mountains on the prefecture's borders are Titaros (1839 meters) and Pieria mountains (2193 meters).

The southern and central part of the prefecture is mountainous, while in its eastern coastal part is the very fertile plain of Katerinis. The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry and now quite a few also in tourism.

The climate in the prefecture of Pieria is continental and extremely healthy, while on the coast it is milder. In recent years, Pieria has seen great tourism development thanks to its immense natural beauty, as well as the ability to combine mountain and sea in an exceptional way.
