Light is defined as something that makes things visible or affords illumination. Darkness is defined as the absence of light. In the context of the Gothic, light and darkness are used as thematic elements that help set the scene. Light and darkness can be seen as two of the core elements of the Gothic. Light and Darkness can also be used as two opposing forces the are always in conflict. Light representing hope, life, and good. And darkness representing, despair, death, and evil.

In a rhetorical sense, light and darkness makes it argument primarily through appeals of pathos, logos, and ethos. The pathos is made through the use of light and darkness as ways of setting the setting, but as well as our ancestral fear of the dark. The logos appeal is made through our own association of the two. Traditionally we seen light as something to desire and darkness as something to repel and avoid.

This particular genre of video games typically features a first-person camera angle, a source of light, a monster or creature that you must avoid at all costs, and a simple premise: survive and make your way our of the current scenario. Being placed either abandoned or rundown building or even in the woods at night, your character is always given a small source of light so that they can traverse dark hallways and illuminate their path.
