Interactive Anchor Charts

I wanted to take this opportunity to share something different that we're doing in my class with our Chrome books this fall. I was inspired by one of the breakout sessions I went to at the LD@School Conference this summer. The teacher there discussed how anchor charts are only valuable if the students can fully access them whenever they need to and however they need to. She used QR codes to have them read aloud to kids with severe reading difficulty. I thought, "I totally agree! and I can do that too!"

I am brand new to making QR codes and/or finding use for them in the classroom. As a class we developed a few key anchor charts that we use daily, such as our decoding strategies. Most students easily read these but I have a few that would take too much valuable time sounding them out each time they need them so I added QR codes of me reading them that they can scan when they require access. Focusing on our global competency of Communication I wanted to try something different that allowed me to more effectively communicate with my students and also allowed them to more effectively access the resources they need with increased independence.

Steps:

First, I used my iPhone to make a video of me simply reading the anchor charts and uploaded it to youtube so I could easily get a link.

Next I went to an online QR code generator and made a code with my video link.

Then, I printed the code and pasted it onto the anchor charts.

After that, I used our projector to model how to go into the Chrome store and add the QR Code Extension to our toolbar. Each student did this with their own account.

Lastly, the students used their chromebooks to scan the code and have the anchor charts read to them needed.

* Reflection:

Interestingly enough, this seemed very innovative and exciting for me since I've never 'dabbled' in QR codes before but to my students (who have been using QR codes for years) this seemed like an obvious next step and wasn't nearly as exciting for them as I assumed it would be!!

I would like to somehow make these accessible for my students between their two classrooms and home. I believe they would benefit from the precise language they are used to being cued by in their LD program in all other contexts that they practise their reading in. I would also like to personalize them to have specific next steps or give reminders for common mistakes they tend to make so they can be encouraged and supported even when not directly with me. Maybe a specific QR code video for each student? Somehow attach it in our Google Classroom? Chrome Toolbar as a favourite? So they can click on it as many times as needed? Alternatively print out the code and have it glued into their agenda cover or something so they can use any device to scan it for cues when needed? Not too sure yet!
