What do you believe about the purpose of school?
Who should decide what students need to learn?
How do you define curriculum? How do you think it should be developed?
Should there be different curriculum for different students?
What is your role regarding curriculum at either the local or the district level?
How does your program align with your philosophy of curriculum?

The purpose of school is to provide students with opportunities through education, to grow both academically and intellectually, in a way that prepares them to meet their varying interests'. The learning curriculum should involve administration, teacher, and family. These groups should work together and feel as if everyone has a voice of positive change and growth. Curriculum in my opinion is defined as the foundation of education that students are required to be taught and ultimately learn. This curriculum is established by the school, the district, and the state. The curriculum established should always consider the student when being developed, and what is best for them. Curriculum should be both exciting and motivating, as growth occurs. There should be different curriculum for different students. Everyone's experiences are different, and the importance of being motivated and successful, helps students achieve high standards. My role, regarding curriculum would be centered at the local and school level. As a teacher I would aim to mirror my student's needs with the curriculum taught. My school aligns with my educational philosophy as much as possible. Unfortunately, they are forced to make school wide curriculum decisions, that ultimately may cater to standardized testing & district initiatives.

The purpose of schooling is to equip individuals with the skills necessary to participate in the social life of their community and to change the nature of the social order as needed.
Students should be allowed to decide what and how they learn,
they learn to love the things they love. Curriculum is the planed and unplanned learning experience taught by educators to learners to achieve set goals within and outside school environment. Thus, curriculum development encompasses designing integrated plans for learning, implementation and evaluation of the plans, and the outcomes of the learning experience. It is necessary that the curriculum be the same for all kids so that they are learning the same things around the same age. My role as a teacher in the curriculum process is to help students develop an engaged relationship with the content. Therefore, I learn in this program how to effectively build lessons that include experiments, case studies and activities to deliver curriculum.

I think that school serves a dual purpose. I think it should provide students a well-rounded knowledge base and as students progress through school it should become more focused on the student’s future and what they will do after completing high school. I think that as students progress through the K-12 system, they should have more and more say but I do not think that they should be the sole deciding factor. I think that curriculum should be developed by all the stakeholders involved. All curriculum decisions should be able to be explained and shown to have value to the students. Students can definitely have different curriculums but I do think it is straining helpfulness to have students in the same class learning different things. Students know what they want to learn the best, but it is a teacher’s job to determine the best way to teach the things they want to learn and the things they don’t.

The purpose of school is to give students the knowledge and skills needed in order to become a functioning member of society. The Federal government should give overarching guidelines for the entire country but for specific areas, their local government should create the curriculum, which is the subjects and content that are taught in individual schools and courses. It should be developed by the heads of districts as well as administrators and teachers that will be executing the actual teaching within the classroom. There should not be different curriculum for every individual student. The way in which the curriculum is delivered to students can be different but content and subjects should remain intact. My role is to plan and deliver it in a way that every single student can understand and use the information or skills that they need to be successful in my class. The program that I teach in aligns well since it offers tremendous freedom as a teacher to carry out the curriculum and keep it current.

The purpose of school is to help students of all abilities become self-sufficient, employable adults. Administrators familiar with the school population should design the curriculum with feedback from teachers. Curriculum is the outline or framework of what is to be taught in a course. It should be continuously evaluated and updated to meet the needs of the current generation of students. The overall curriculum will be different for different students. For example, a 9th grade classroom where students struggle with the concepts of multiplication and division will follow a different curriculum than a 9th grade classroom of students who passed the Algebra 1 Keystone exam as 7th graders. As a substitute teacher, I follow the lesson plans that are provided. I do not have access to curriculum information. However, I often ask questions during lunch with other teachers so that I can understand how the subject matter I am learning is used in the schools where I work.

I believe the purpose of school is to help provide students of all ages develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities that will aid them in being contributing, functional members of society. I believe everyone that plays a role in the schooling process (teachers, administration, students, parents) should have a say in the curriculum, which I would define as the base upon which the educational processes that will define each students’ experiences while in school is built. A curriculum should be in a state of constant development; utilizing feedback and assessment to constantly try to make improvements wherever possible. I think the curriculum should offer flexibility in the teaching strategies that can be employed within it in order to present the content in the best possible manner for individual students’ needs. The role of the teacher regarding the curriculum is to present the subject content in the most effective ways possible to promote student learning and engagement.

I believe the purpose is school is to give students a knowledge base to be successful. As professionals, teachers should be able to use their professional judgment on educating the diverse children in their class. Every child is different and has various needs. With that being said, there should be different curriculum for students as they progress through school. School is supposed to prepare children for the future, which looks different for each child. The curriculum should reflect that. Currently, I have some input in the curriculum at my district. With my assistant superintendent, my partner and I research various programs. In my program, I differentiate for every student. As an ESL teacher, my students are at various levels of English proficiency and therefore have different needs. I must make the content accessible for them.

I believe that the purpose of school is to provide children with the necessary experience and information to be healthy and productive adults. I think that the curriculum of the students should be decided by society, the government, and the student’s parents represented by the school board. I define curriculum as the blueprint of information and experiences the children should encounter then understand in the classroom and how that process is conducted. It should be developed by experts through incorporating what students should learn, as discussed above, and how students should learn based on the individual students and specific classroom makeup. I think that the learning goals should be mostly the same for all students, but the curriculum should be modified in the aspect of how the information and experiences of the class are introduced to the child through IEP’s. As I am hoping to be a teacher, I believe my main purpose will be to deliver the curriculum objects through adapting it to fit the students needs. Not having specifics on any specific department program, I cannot provide any input on how it aligns with my philosophy of curriculum.

I believe the purpose of school is to educate the next generation of our country's leaders and citizens. Curriculum is the overall design of a student's learning for a given school year. While federal/state governments have some responsibility in making sure students are learning, I believe the majority of curriculum design should be done at the local level by school districts and teachers. Curriculum should be designed with a balance of essential skills and knowledge in mind that should be refreshed every 3-5 years or so to keep up with an ever-changing society and current events.
As a classroom teacher it is my responsibility to design lessons according to the needs of individual students and the state-mandated standards of what students should know or know how to do. While I believe in holding students to the same standards of learning, there does need to be some flexibility to address individual needs of students - a delicate balance.

Curriculum Philosophy-C.Kelly Curriculum is a map to guide the learning of the masses designed to provide a guideline of what to teach. It should be developed as a starting place from which individual variations occur. The students should decide what they need to learn and it is the adults job to give them as many opportunities to learn as possible. My role is to be aware of the curriculum and use it as an organizational tool or roadmap to develop a plan for my students. I believe there should be one curriculum which outlines content with a variety of approaches and flexibility in it's implementation. I believe the purpose of school is to teach the next generation what we already know so they can learn from our mistakes

I believe that the purpose of school is to educate our youth and prepare them for life after K-12, whether that be college, technical school, certification programs, or direct entrance into the work field. We must educate them on social and life skills, what it looks like to be a functioning member of society, and give them the academic skills they are going to need for the future. There are multiple components and people that should contribute to developing a curriculum including government on all levels (to a certain degree), school administration and staff, parents and families, and most importantly the students. I think that there should be a general curriculum, but based on student future goals, academic/behavioral needs, and cognitive level that there should be a differentiated curriculum. In order to ensure student success, the priority must be the student. I think that local jurisdiction should be involved to make sure that districts are providing an effective instruction, but districts should have the flexibility to differentiate based on their population.

I think the purpose of school is to teach basic skills and develop social interactive skills.

To prepare students for work and higher education. In developing a curriculum there should be several

components that allow for a well round education. Each curriculum should provide essential skills that address the needs of a diversified group of students. When approaching the design of the curriculum a cognitive approach should be taken to meet the needs of the whole student. I also think parents should be incorporated in many of the lesson in order to involve parent student participation something that seem to be lacking in education today is parental involvement. Finally, creativity needs to be incorporated in the curriculum to allow the student to look within for learning. Today programs like music and art seem to take a back seat in the learning process but they are just as important for higher thinking as math or English. The school district should be instrumental in making sure all areas of learning are incorporated in the curriculum to ensure student success.
