Concentration by Samantha Palmrose

My concentration is on how people go through everyday life hiding their feelings because of what society has deemed proper ways behaving. It will focus on the facades people generate in order to maintain this proper behavior. How we maintain, break, fight, and feel constrained by society standards. My concentration will use the form of everyday pottery but will either be broken, pieced together, or torn apart in order to convey the maintaining or breaking ones accepted form/ behavior. It may also show human like figures with open gashes or holes with colored glazes representing the person true thoughts and feelings.

When I designed this project I was originally going to place the sculpture in a shoe box. When the piece was fired with its final glaze it looked way to good in my opinion to add a complex background and instead it did just fine on its own.
It also conveys the concentration because in society we often try to hold our emotions and who we really are in fear of what others would think. so the figure is curled up but his real emotions are still escaping him despite his effort to keep it in.

I don't really know why I decided on this design. I think it may be because I often feel like I am unable to speak my mind no matter how hard I try. Which is mostly because I am afraid what I have to say might offend someone. For example I have grown up in a conservative family, but area and a liberal area. I often find my self agreeing with both conservatives and liberals on many topics. Yet when ever I try to say what I think I feel like I will be persecuted against for my belief. Like this one time I was talking to my mother and she called me a communist, simply for being able to agree and understand both sides of the conservatives and liberals. So when I created I conveyed this by converting the actual mouth and lip of the vase into real human lips and mouth. Then I made the inside of the mouth black in order to draw the viewers eye to the mouth. Finally I wrapped red string around the neck, mouth, and body of the vase. To represent the idea that I felt strangled by what I could say and not say in worrying that someone would hate me or that I upset another.

Pieces

When I made this pieces it went flying off wheel because it wasn't secure. When it flew off it ended up shattering. Instead of throwing the pieces away and making a new piece I took the pieces and scored and slipped them together. In most cases people would have gotten ridden of the pieces. But instead of doing what most people would do I rebuilt. I believe this connects to my concentration because people often find themselves trying to pick up pieces and put themselves back together after a emotional experience. After an experience like that people try to act like nothing happened, they try to fit themselves back into society mold. Except that experienced has changed them and it is the experience that boke them that make them who they are. So when I broke this cup, I wanted to make the crakes be the focus, so I pained only over the crakes in hopes to draw the viewer eye in to those crakes. This is because the crakes are what make this cup different despite its regular form.
