Welcome to my Digi-Life Blog. Information on this blog will include a link to my Pinterest pin board, were you will see my saved pictures. The theme is animals, all consisting of dog and cat pictures. I chose this as animals have played a huge impact on my life and I wouldn't be who I am today without all the wonderful cats and dogs I've had throughout my life. Pocket is very informative and interesting. I've never used pocket before, but the news articles that I found on it have been extremely interesting. I have screenshot the articles that I found particularly interesting and I have displayed them on my Padlet. It includes a Map mashup, I particularly found this interesting as I've never come across this term but I was up to the challenge. Creating and uploading a YouTube video was something that was new to me. I remember when YouTube was launched and loved the vast array of videos that are uploaded. The thoughts of uploading my own video was very daunting but a video of recycling a Lucozade bottle was an idea that I thought would be interesting to do. Reflecting on this Padlet and the work involved is interesting as I felt that I struggled but I was determined to try my best and to try and get out of my comfort zone and make a good attempt at creating a Padlet that is easy to read and that engages with the reader.

Comparing and contrasting Pinterest with Pocket.

There are many similarities and differences between Pinterest with Pocket. Pinterest has the ability to display appropriate pictures that they believe that the Pinterest user will like. This is similar with Pocket. It displays news articles in a particular way, by using eye catching front pictures to catch the readers attention. It makes the reader intrigued and curious to see what the article as to offer as the graphics used are cleverly put as the colours blend well together. I find that Pinterest and Pocket are similar in these aspects.

On the other hand, I find differences between both platforms. With Pinterest its just automatically graphics so you either just like it or not. A lot of it goes down to if the photographer has a high quality camera as the pictures that are the most eye catching are the ones most likely to be bookmarked. There's no writing involved with Pinterest. With Pocket, it's main purpose is writing. Pocket is a article platform that display up to date information and articles that are engaging with the reader and that the reader can relate to. Overall, both these platforms are good sources of information they are both completely different but both set out to appeal to the websites users interests.

Using social media tools such as Pinterest, Padlet, YouTube and various other social media tools has supported my learning as a digital citizen. By using YouTube, I had to create an account, create a video and publish the video on Padlet. As a digital user, I had to learn and engage in this task to publish this information. According to ‘Lifewire tech for Humans’, it states that “you can set the privacy level, determining whether the public can watch the videos or only authorised friends” (Walker, 2021) With this in mind, I made sure that the account I made was private and was not public. I made a link available on the Padlet so anyone with access to the Padlet can see the video. Making a new Pinterest account was interesting. For the task it asked to bookmark when I liked. I created a folder about cats and dogs. When I initially put this on the Padlet, I was able to find out that I made a mistake, and I was just liking pictures and I didn’t know how to create a folder. From looking up videos and making many mishaps along the way, I finally was able to create a bookmark folder and could add a functioning link to the Padlet. I found ‘Collecting, organizing, and sharing pins in Pinterest: interest-driven or social-driven?’ to be very useful as it answered questions that I had. It discussed how Pinterest is “a pinboard-style content sharing platform that allows users to exhibit collections of images or videos. The main idea of Pinterest is to collect, organize and share content” (Han, Choi, Chun, Kwon, Kim, Choi, 2014, p.16) The use of Pocket was also new to me. I had heard of Pinterest, but never used it but I never came across Pocket. Making an account and discovering new articles on it was an interesting experience. When normally looking for news, I would normally use Facebook or The Irish Independent to keep up to date. Pocket opened a new option to find news articles. The recommended ones are fascinating to read as so many of them would be articles that I would have not thought of exploring. By finding the website ‘zapper’, I was able to find straight forward information about how to use Pocket in simple language that was easy to follow. It gives many screenshots and step by step instruction on how to sign up and what to expect when you become a member of Pocket. It uses easy language such as “start by tapping the three-dot menu button in the address bar” (Pot, 2019, n.p.n) I found trying to navigate these new websites to be quite challenging and honestly, it did become quite overwhelming as I was unsure if what I was doing was correctly or not. I spent extra time trying to understand the background on Pocket, but with extra work I feel more confident than what I felt like before starting and during the Padlet process. When I got the assessment about having to do a Padlet, this process really confused me. I originally made a new Padlet and kept questioning myself if I sent to the whole class, so I immediately deleted it as I was panicked if I was making huge mistakes. Eventually I had to start the process and hope that I wasn’t doing it wrong. By looking at “The writing is on the wall: using Padlet for whole-class engagement” helped me to grasp a better understanding about the background of using it. It gave simple language such as “choosing your walls level of privacy” (Furchs,2014, p. 7) This gave me peace of mind as it showed that it was not the only person that thought about this. This class is a zoom class, so every class is online. I found this to be interesting. Each week consists of pop-up quizzes so weekly study before class is necessary to be able to complete the quizzes. Luckily, I’m familiar with using zoom so I didn’t come across any obstacles when trying to log in. According to '12 Captivating facts about zoom video communications’ it discusses how “zoom makes it easy for users to join meetings, share screens, and collaborate seamlessly.” (Freitag, 2024, n.p.n) Overall, I learned a so much from creating this Padlet. I had very poor knowledge about having to create one. I was overwhelmed and telling myself that I’ll never understand. The data wrapper is where I started to gain slightly more confidence. When I followed the U.C.D guide on how to do it and after many attempts, a map was finally created and that was the confidence boost that I really needed. From there, even though I was unsure if things were being done correctly, being able to do the map really helped. In ‘Self-confidence: interpersonal strategies’ It states that “While people are most often concerned with boosting their self-esteem, there are also instances where they seek to minimize their achievements, or convince themselves that the task at hand will be difficult rather than easy” (Benabou, Tirole, 1999, p. 33)

References:

Benabou, Roland, and Jean Tirole.
