I am modifying the method that students can use to present their findings to the rest of the class. The project requires students to research a technical process that they are assigned. Previously students had to present their work via a slideshow. In the new lesson, students will be able to present via oral presentation, a slideshow, a screencast, or a written paper. This differentiation would allow students to present their product in such a way that works best for them and would mix things up a little for everyone else.

My P.D. Differentiated Instruction product this year was focused on creating a Tic-Tac-Toe / Choice Board for my art classes. The board I created is completely modifiable so that the board can be used in a variety of ways, some of these methods include, tiered instruction, different learning styles, and Tic-Tac-Toe strategy to name a few. In terms of differentiating instruction, I like the idea of the choice board because it allows students a choice at how they decide to learn a topic or concept in art and design.

Marriage of a Liberal and a Conservative: APUS History Students plan a wedding using the social issues, and key people and themes from the 60s - 80s. They will have to plan tables, best man / maid of honorn, songs, tables, and pictures (imagery ) of their wedding. The planning will involve making choices and finding common ground and compromise but this may not always be the case----prenuptial anyone? Or one person calling the shots? Where is the Compromise?

I created a project where students plan a wedding during the Gilded Age (used as an assessment for the unit). It is as a new way to display understanding of the key issues of the time period from the point of view of different historical figures. In groups, students are put in charge of 1 guest table, researching different people and their viewpoints. They will make choices about how and when to use the figures for different creative writings such as a dialogue and a toast, as well as making song requests and gift choices.

Each student has to read a primary source about life on the trail to give them an overview.

From their they could make a brochure on the materials and costs they need, a video trying to sell wagons to settlers, write a narrative of the experience of either a Native American or American settler on the trail, and several others.

I found this worked great! many students went got really into it and made great products!

During this professional development, I devoted my energies to increasing student choice and tiering my research writing assignments. Since the unit is primarily focused on adding value to sources, the tier assignments will be differentiated based the degree of difficulty and sophistication of the strategy a student will use to present careful analyses, well-defended claims, and clear information.

For the DI Mike Courtney and I worked together to create multiple products for use in Health class, and in Physical Education. We first started with Communication in our 8th grade classes. We created a Give Me 5 Menu that has different activities/projects listed with varying point values. It involves different activities and assignments that can be completed in groups or with a partner. Next, we created a product on Bullying for the 7th graders. They could create a speech or role play and perform for the class. They could do a creative writing assignment, such as, a poem, story or skit. Lastly, they could do some type of artistic work, such as a drawing, collage, animation, or even a brochure. We also created a project for 9th and 10th graders in the PE portion of Wellness. The students work in groups and choose a unit of their liking, but have to prove the unit meets the needs of physical education. And finally there are the Sun Safety assignments which can be anything from a slideshow, video, web page, journalism, health, or art/advertising.
