The promise is to include a real variety of art forms and artists on the tour, and local learning settings have been among the breathtaking settings we have visited on the tours over the years. Artillery dreams of being able to support schools and colleges more, and the contact we often have with schools is thinking through the challenges of taking part so it was incredibly powerful to watch this film created by Natalie at Little Ren Hen Films with staff speaking more about why they go the extra miles to be sure their learners are part of the E17 Art Trail.

Discovering an exceptional artist working just around the corner from where you live is one of my favourite things about going out on the trail. Ermioni Rammou's smoke fired ceramics are stunning, some even move as if they were made of fabric. We have many incredible ceramicists on the art trail each year and sometimes I wonder about organising a ceramics trail.

There was a long-distance lorry driver who made these incredible sculptures from wood - like something from an impossible other universe - and he would just stand with them on the street during the trail. I don't know where he's gone now, maybe he moved away. I can't even remember his name but he was a big inspiration to me. He taught me about what an artist can be, and how you can exhibit in any way at all.

It's an excellent poem and it was the perfect place. I think it was part of a poetry trail a few years ago.

The feedback I got was so fantastic, from the people in my street and those who found it on the trail, that I felt emboldened to push myself into a sculptural career. That was in 2011.

But for me working with artists and poets on creating a poetry trail in estate agents' windows along Hoe Street and beyond was the first time I had really felt connected to the community within which I lived. For so many years I commuted to a job in town each day and pretty much only came home to Walthamstow to sleep. Meeting the poets and artists together with the support from Laura and Morag led to me finding my place here. We had over 300 visitors on the Saturday to the designers’ market, and nearly 500 on the Sunday to the ‘Bookish’ book-art market. Good times. Our first market as part of the trail was in September 2008, at the Vestry House Museum - we had 2 markets on 2 dates and had 600 plus visitors - people just kept coming in - which for a tiny venue was wonderful ..! Visitors were welcomed by my dad wearing flippers and a snorkel (when it wasn't too hot!) and he handed out UV torches for people to explore under the waves. It was great fun and a magical memory for our family.

I decided to show my photographs and sketchbook drawings made over the course of several visits to Washburn, Illinois which is 100 miles south of Chicago, in the middle of nowhere. Everything stuck to the walls with blu-tak. We had a group visit from the local London Cycling Campaign group, an impromptu ukulele recital, friends dropping by. It was a lot of fun, and I got to exhibit stuff I'd never thought to make public.

We were inspired by the Art Trail to create an installation with moving footage as its inspiration.
Since 2010 we have screened over 1,000 short films shown at over 10 venues
We have welcomed over 5,000 people to watch over 5,000 minutes of film.  That’s a week of film exhibition back to back!
We have partnered with the BFI, Film London, Stow Film Lounge, The Barbican, Stow Brothers and The Empire Cinema Group
Our judges and supporters include Director Barry Bliss, Stella Creasy MP, Actor Paul McGann, Artist Georgina Starr and Lady Oona King.
And we’ve shown our best short films at The BFI Southbank, The Empire Cinema, Vestry House Museum, The Big Penny Social and Ye Olde Rose and Crown Pub.
Our filmmakers have visited us from Paris, Brussels, Milan, Bucharest, Seoul and Los Angeles.

I've even been part of (and enjoyed) collaborative projects with other local creatives.  I've experienced fabulous art, I've walked streets I'd never seen before, I've met wonderful people and I've drunk too much free wine.  I can only hope this pause in funding is just that - a time to recoup, regroup and get back together for the biggest Art Trail yet  - SOON.  Quite frankly I believe that The E17 Art Trail been a huge part of what makes this area what it is today. The year we opened Inky Cuttlefish Studios in time for the E17 Art Trail, the year we moved into Gnome House, the Olympics year, the year we were Borough of Culture, the year my son was born...? 

My stand out memory is taking part in the first E17 Art Trail...with a new babe in arms. I have watched both my little girl and the E17 Art Trail grow and the E17 Art Trail years are marked by how old Isabella is in the photo. I can't separate the two! The E17 Art Trail has witnessed both my children growing up and enjoying an annual festival of meeting old and new friends, attending parties and celebrating art in all its forms.   The years mark both their growth and exhibitions I have put on during the E17 Art Trail.  

In 2005 I had a new born baby, had just finished my MA Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art and was only just in time to make the deadline to take part in 2005 E17 Art Trail (was told about it by another brilliant E17 resident, painter and new mum Brigit Collins , whom I met through NCT classes). I had made the decision to give up my full time office job to be a working artist mum. The E17 Art Trail was my toe in the water. I didn't know many of the local creatives...but that changed very quickly and it is thanks to the E17 Art Trail. There is something very intimate about allowing strangers into your home or personal 'working' space. I can still remember the first meetings and conversations in 2005 with people whom I now call very special friends coming into my home for a glass of wine and to see my exhibition.

We were unsure at first whether it was the right platform for us as a performing arts group but after Gnome House opened in 2015 we started doing our own listings and our Art Trail offer gradually grew each time with workshops and performances linked in to the themes. At the last one Seneke and Moussa performed on the live Art Trail podcast on opening night and then again at an outdoor performance at Gnome House at the premiere of a short film ‘Light & Shadow’ created by our Kickstarter Eric King using footage from Seneke’s trip to The Gambia in 2021. We had just opened and the art trail was on, sending many new potential customers our way, thank you!  When I think back over the years I also met most of my creative friends through the art trail and existing friendships where cemented. Great exhibition opening at Inky Cuttlefish are a wonderful memory sharing ideas and a glass of wine with friends. Also many art trails ago I remember bumping into Jonathan O'Dea, both of us on bikes and art trailing. We continued our journey together that day, one of many examples of the  impromptu get togethers the art trail  is so good for. It helped making Walthamstow into one of London's most communal places.

I "met" my husband via Guardian Soulmates online dating in September 2008, as my best friend gave me a month's subscription for my 50th birthday.  I won't bore you with all the incredible details of why I contacted him, despite him being a terrible match in theory, but fairly soon in our correspondence, he mentioned he had a poem up in the Wood Street Indoor Market, as part of the E17 Art Trail.  So, 5 days after we first got in contact, I decided to go and see it, and several other displays in the vicinity, and to surprise him in his shop (Second Nature in Wood Street, which I knew the address of, by then!).  I apparently scared him to  death, when I made myself known, and he failed to offer me the cup of tea he'd promised, if I were to drop in.  He also told me in a message  later that evening, that I was "scarier in real life"!  Obviously, we both got over that unfortunate situation, and have visited exhibitions almost every year since, especially as Sharon Drew is a friend of ours.  I assume we would have met up at some point, but the Art Trail definitely gave me an excuse, so it'll always have a special place in my heart! ]]> 2023-06-14 07:09:10 UTC https://padlet.com/artilleryevents/e17arttrail/wish/2623146660 https://padlet.com/artilleryevents/e17arttrail/wish/2645304418 I love the art trail so much.
