Eliezer has a talk with Moishe the Beadle to help in his Kabbalah studies.

After Eliezer's father told him he was too young for studying Kabbalah Eliezer went and found Moishe the Beadle to help guide him in studying Kabbalah. Moishe the Beadle asked Eliezer why he prays and made it so that for the first time in the book Eliezer questions his faith.

Ride on the cattle cars(Chapter 2)

"The two disappeared. The doors clanked shut. We had fallen into the trap, up to our necks. The doors were nailed, the way back irrevocably cut off. The world had become a hermetically sealed cattle car"(Wiesel pg. 24).

How it was for Jews when they were riding the cattle cars going to Auschwitz.

During the train ride the Jews were forced to give up all their gold, silver, and watches so that they weren't killed by the German army. After a woman in her 50's who had a ten year old son started screaming and crying about seeing a fire to the point of being gagged and beaten by the other Jews in the cattle car.

Eliezers talk with one of the prisoners (chapter 3)

" 'Hey, kid, how old are you?' The man interrogating me was an inmate. I could not see his face, but his voice was weary and warm. 'Fifteen' 'No, You're eighteen' 'Fool listen to what I say' Then he asked my father, who answered: 'I'm fifty' 'No' The man now sounded angry. 'Not fifty. You're forty. Do you hear? Eighteen and forty' "(Wiesel pg. 30)

When Eliezer and his father first arrived at Auschwitz a prisoner who's been in the camp already told him and his father to fake their ages when asked by officers

This event in the story is important because the prisoner most likely saved Eliezer and his father from dying. If the prisoner hadn't told them to fake their ages than they would have probably been sent to the ovens to be killed.

Idek beating Eliezer(chapter 4)

" One day when Idek was venting his fury, I happened to cross his path. He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again, crushing me with ever more violent blows, until I was covered in blood"(Wiesel pg. 53)

Eliezer was beat by Idek because of his golden crown.

After the dentist failed to remove Eliezer's golden crown Idek beat Eliezer and his father so that he can break Eliezer and force him to give up his golden crown. Eliezer didn't want to give up his crown because it would take his ability to eat but after two weeks Eliezer caved and gave them his crown.

Eliezer starts loosing faith in God(chapter 5)

"And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God's silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against him"(Wiesel pg. 69)

During Yom Kippur Eliezer didn't fast for two reasons, one of them being that he found no reason to.

While all the prisoners were discussing if they should fast for Yom Kippur and Eliezer decided not to because of his father and because he found no reason to fast. Eliezer said that him not fasting was his way of acting rebellious against God.

The Jews were forced to run no matter how tired they were in the cold weather.

When the Russians were getting to close the Nazis evacuated the camp and forced all the Jews to run as fast as possible. They didn't allow the Jews to stop running because if they did they would get shot.

chapter 7

"One day when we had come to a stop, a worker took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into a wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs"(Wiesel pg. 100)

When they stopped somewhere a worker had thrown bread in the wagon causing people to fight over it.

The Jews started fighting each other for bread because of how hungry they were to the point of someone killing his father. Eliezer had to watch a son kill his father and get killed by the prisoners around them even though he was only 16.

Eliezer's father dying(chapter 8)

"No prayers were said over his tomb. No candle lit in his memory. His last word had been my name. He had called out to me and I had not answered"

After Eliezer's dad got more sick he ended up dying.

Eliezer's dad kept getting more and more sick and Eliezer was taking care of him with mostly the guilt of treating him like Rabbi Eliahu was treated by his son. When Eliezer woke up on January 29th his father was dead and replaced by another sick person with no prayers said for him or any candles lit in his memory.

Eliezer being evacuated from the camp(chapter 9)

"The battle did not last long. Around noon, everything was calm again. The SS had fled and the resistance had taken charge of the camp. At six o'clock that afternoon, the first American tank stood at the gates of Buchenwald"(Wiesel pg. 115).

The Jews all got evacuated bit by bit until the Americans showed up.

The SS officers started evacuating the Jews after telling them to go into role call. After evacuating a few thousand Jews everyday they decided to evacuate the remaining Jews at the same time so they were able to blow up the camp. Before they could be fully evacuated the resistance stopped the SS and forced them to flee so they can take control of the camp and free the remaining Jews.
