This is inspirational to me in that we all start from someplace, but when we choose to take a chance on bettering ourselves. While we may not always like the path we took to get their, it is always inspiring to "watch the sunset" or look back on how far we have come.

I am a firm believer that everyone is worthy and deserving of therapy no matter what stage of life you are in or what is going on in your own personal life. Therapy, to me, is allowing yourself to become vulnerable and discuss things that are going to allow you to grow in many different aspects of life. Not just those who are struggling would benefit from therapy and I think that therapy and other forms of self-care is a form of allowing yourself to grow.

To me, therapy represents a process that is ever-changing. It is one filled with growth, challenges, and, in the midst of it all, beauty. Flowers may wither in a storm but after the rain falls, they have the potential to grow even bigger and brighter than before. The same is true for our clients. This picture also demonstrates the role of the therapist in that he or she is to walk alongside their client in the very beginning stages of the process as well as the intermediate and ending stages. Just as a plant needs attention and care throughout its growing process, our clients need that, too.

This picture is a perfect representation of therapy to me. It shows somewhat identical objects - thus representing a non identifiable difference between the clients and therapists. The only major difference is that the client is the one in need of a warm, welcoming and empathetic atmosphere at the time of the sessions. Therapy is supposed to feel like an embrace to our clients. Therapy must provide that warm, welcoming and empathetic shoulder/ help that clients need.

When people go camping, they often experience beauty, respite, and connection. It can also be exhausting as one has to set up the tent, cook over the fire, etc. I picture therapy to be like a campsite: it is a respite from the stressors of life where we can pause, take a breath, an be seen and heard. However, it must be constructed by both the therapist and client. In this way, therapy has both passive and active components--the client receives empathy and care while also learning new skills to improve their lives and functioning.

I believe that therapy can help everyone in different ways. Therapy will not look identical for each client. The experience and interaction will be unique and tailored to the client’s individual needs. Some clients may need more sessions than others to fully open and share what is going on in their life. Other clients will open quickly and lay everything out for the therapist right away. For this assignment I choose a picture of a sunset because I think it appropriately fits my metaphor of what therapy looks like. Sunsets are beautiful even though they are all different. No sunset is ever the same. Some days the clouds or landmarks are barriers that block the sun and hide its true colors. Some sunsets are more dull than other days, but it still represents the end of the day. The sun takes time to set and its progression is interesting to watch and value at each stage and season. This symbolizes a client’s journey through therapy and all of the beautiful moments that happen along the way.

I think therapy is eye opening. Whether viewed as good or bad, everybody has the opportunity to uncover parts of themselves through therapy. This is a constant process of inner growth that continues to reveal itself to the individual throughout the therapeutic process. The therapist can present the client with opportunities, but it is ultimately up to the client to see where it goes. Therapy gives individuals the chance to learn more about themselves: their capabilities, their talents, their strengths, and their challenges, etc. This enlightening process allows for the client to engage in introspection. My favorite piece of this eye opening therapeutic experience is the confidence clients can gain from their new found self awareness and the assurance that it gives them to push forward to live the life they have always wanted.

To me, therapy is like a garden in the way that one person has a vision for the future; however, there needs to be guidance along the way. This is similar to a garden as without someone assisting the original creator by watering, weeding, or replanting, the garden has limited chances of being a healthy garden as it is a lot of work to maintain. Through individual therapy, the therapist works together with the individual to create interventions to improve areas of need and to reach their goals.

To some it can indicate what may lie ahead ("Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.."). A sunrise can be the first light after a dark night. I like this photo especially, as a depiction of a sunrise as it shows the sun rising over the mountains. In life, there are several mountains and valleys we navigate through. The hope of the morning light is always there, sometimes taking longer to breach a higher horizon.

(Ashley Patterson) I chose a picture that represented an individual journey. In individual therapy, ever client that I will be coming into contact with is going to be much different from the next. It is important to remember as a future social worker that I need to treat every individual case as its own and nothing within this field is going to be cookie cutter. Each client is going to take a different twist and turn to get to their own finish line and it is my job to accept that, acknowledge that and go with them on their unique journey. To me this picture represents three different means to an end, like the different journeys I will be taking with my clients to get to their finish line.

The Process

(Bailey Damico) I chose this art piece called The Process for multiple reasons. We all know therapy is a process whether that be from the therapists point of view or the one receiving services. But what really drew me in to this picture was the water. Sometimes it can feel like you're drowning while other days it might feel like a puddle. For many people, depression, anxiety, etc. comes in waves and you do your best to keep your head above water.

Everyone is unique and has their own design.

This picture stuck out to me not only for the beautiful designs but also the description that was listed with the photo. The description of how the eggs are decorated specifically says that each one is unique and not a single one is ever recreated 100% the same. That made me think of how we are all unique in our own ways, so individual therapy needs to be tailored to each person uniquely. Though similar methods can be used to work with individuals, it still has to be made fit for each of our clients. Every client deserves to have a treatment plan that is individualized and is going to work best for them. So, it is just like a Ukrainian Egg that each one is always different.

As I think about my own experience with therapy, memories of disaster comes vividly in my mind. I had two awful encounters with therapist; both made the sessions about themselves. They did not know how to share their experience and bring it back to me. To me, this pic describes what I feel therapy should be and how I view myself as a therapist. I am a clinician and that means my client comes first. In order to give my client the best of me I must be present at all times. However, this does not negate that I am still a human and have struggles just like the next person, and this should make me empathetic, understanding, and compassionate to the clients that I serve.

Connection

(Carlyn Sperling) When thinking of individual therapy, the first word that came to mind is "connection". The therapists goal is to help the individual feel more connected to their feelings and experiences. Labels for what they have been through, education behind those experiences, and ways to heal. In addition, connection between the therapist and individual is pertinent to the success of the individual. This picture is of a ceramic vessel with a focused center and connections that lead to the outside. Much like the individual in therapy, they are connected to the world around them. If one string were to break, it would affect the strength of the individual, but in the end, can be repaired.

Grounding and Growing

(Carly Walker) I knew right away I wanted to use a tree as my impage for therapy. I came across this piece and knew it was what I was looking for. I like how the roots take up as much of the picture as the branches. to me this metaphor says that in order to grow, we have to have strong roots. This means to be a good therapist and spread our braches to serve new clients we must have a stong foundation, both educationally and personally. Our work must be grounded in evidence and we ourselves must be grounded by support. We have to feed our roots by taking care of ourselves as people first in order for our branches to grow and our reach to expand. I hope that makes sense to someone other than me (:
