Peaches are used to gauge Charlies bravery but also are symbolic of something rotten/beautiful/
1. P5 The rarest and most revered feat is to snatch a peach by the flank of the cottage like a zombies hand bursting from the grave' (quote demonstrates fear and immaturity). At the end of the book Charlie does manage to snatch up quite a few peaches- this shows he has matured
2. Peach also represents the theme of appearance VS reality because peaches can look beautiful/normal/perfect but be rotten on the inside
3. p 346 Jasper is away picking peaches saving up money for Laura- what do you think Craig Silvey is trying to say here?? It represents that Jasper is a brave character- him picking peaches is no big deal.

It is a simile and it positions us to feel sympathy for Charlie as he had arrived back home after witnessing Laura's dead body and having to cover it up with Jasper. He chooses three specific words, shaken as he has just seen a dead body and had to cover it up. Pounded as he could be feeling overwhelmed with having to keep the secret of Laura's death now. And stretched, as in, the whole truth he believed in, Laura being a member of a good, well off family and now finding her dead has stretched his truth and waken him up.

I discovered a gift for lying.
character: Charlie is saying this to himself once he was caught from his parents after sneaking out to see Jasper Jones.
Inference:Positioning: The author utilised this aesthetic device which creates and brings a positive factors (gift) into a negative situation (lies). This is considered normal within the town of Corrigan as lying tends to be second nature to most people. However, because Charlie (our protagonist) is a good, innocent and naive character it creates a barrier between childhood and adulthood and outlines that charlie is beginning to grow and develop as a character and person. This positions the audience to deceive Charlie as less of a child and more as an adult. He is slowly becoming the idealisation of a Corrigan character.

This phrase positions us to believe that Charlie is taking his first steps to growing up. By shedding his skin like a snake, he refers to the fact that snakes shed their skin because they outgrow it, just like Charlie has outgrown his childhood as he witnessed the suicide of Laura, and now has to cover the secret up.

In this quote Eliza reveals that she blames herself for the death of her sister Laura, although Eliza didn’t physically cause the death of her sister, she blames herself for not intervening in between. This quote is used to position the audience to sympathise with Eliza because it is discovered that she is under a lot of pressure and strain from knowing how her sister died. In this quote/segment, Eliza is seen as a weak character in terms of being broken by her sister's death, but also made to be strong as she was able to hold the secret in for this whole time. This quote is used to show a new side/revelation of the character Eliza, and what knowledge she knows and has control over.
