Since we are and EPAS school we would like to explore the topic of democracy and parliamentarism in partner countries, challenges as well as strengths of the system. How to teach democracy, starting from student council at school and leading through various levels of participation in democratic life, incl. the history of national parliaments and finalizing at the European Parliament and the European Citizens’ Initiative. Also, simulation of debates and role-plays in which students can discuss current issues, e.g. rule of law, disinformation, climate change, economic discrepancies, etc. Students could work in teams, explore the topics, present their ideas, discuss, visit certain institutions (town councils, parliaments) and do some creative work, such as posters, videos, plays, performances, songs, presentations, screen prints, collages, etc.

Contact: julius@liceum7.edu.pl

About our school:

The Schillerschule is a full-day school covering years 5–13, typically with 4 parallel classes per year group.

Bilingual Education This is the school's most distinctive feature. English is taught intensively from year 5, enabling students to take History, Geography, and Biology in English from years 7–9 onwards, all the way through to the Abitur. Around 40–50% of students choose this bilingual profile.

International Baccalaureate The school is one of only two state schools in Lower Saxony offering IB preparation alongside the Abitur, making it particularly noteworthy in the region.

Profile Lessons From year 8, students choose a personal focus area (Spanish, Computer Science, or Research & Presentation) for 3 hours per week. This time slot also serves as a dedicated window for Erasmus+ and European project work.

Focus of Erasmus: We are actively seeking partner schools to collaborate with us on meaningful exchanges — whether through group mobilities, individual long-term stays, or job shadowings for staff.

At the heart of our Erasmus+ project are three themes we are truly passionate about: digitalisation, sustainability, and European citizenship. We believe these are not just buzzwords, but the defining challenges and opportunities of our time — and that schools across Europe are uniquely positioned to tackle them together.

We have a lot of experience in Erasmus projects - on a bilateral but also a multilateral basis, also as project coordinators.

We can offer: Basically everything!

GIBS is a bilingual (German-English) senior secondary school for students aged 10-18. At present the school comprises more than 600 students and over 60 teaching staff. The rest of the team is made up of the French-, English- and Spanish-speaking co-teachers and the administrative staff. The language of instruction is English in the form of “flexible monolingualism". We also offer Spanish, French, Russian, and Latin and are active as a UNESCO school. We have a Climate Action Group, a debate club and are very active when it comes to projects that focus on remembrance culture. We visit the former concentration camps Mauthausen and Auschwitz, encourage students to reflect on the role of their family members during the 1930s/40s, and conduct oral history interviews with family members. We invite Zeitzeug:innen and Zweitzeug:innen to pass on their experiences to the next generation. Political Studies is another focus, we not only take part in debate tournaments, but also host them. Direct democracy at school is vital, and we take our students' initiatives seriously.

Erasmus experience:

K1 projects with Elche, Madrid, Waterford and K1 project "Future Food and Green Empowerment of Schools" with Denmark/Spain/France from 2017-2027

Contact detail:

www.gibs.at

martina.pfistermueller@gibs.at

We are looking for UK partners to develop a new exchange.

We would be interested in developing a project on young people’s understanding of democracy and civic engagement.

Our school, Lycée Teilhard de Chardin (Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Paris), is located near Paris and has already organised similar projects on citizenship, European values, media literacy, and youth participation.

We are also part of the European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS) network, which gives our students regular opportunities to work on European citizenship and democracy.

As part of this project, we could organise visits to institutional places in Paris and the surrounding area. We could also visit Europa Experience, where students could take part in a simulation of the European Parliament.

The aim of the project would be to help young people better understand how democracy works, why it matters, and how they can take an active role in society.

Students could take part in workshops, debates, institutional visits, meetings with local organisations, and collaborative activities with European partners.

The project would encourage critical thinking, dialogue, respect for different opinions, European citizenship, and active participation among young people. How can we stimulate the democratic process in a way to encompass everyone and that all people can relate to but still holds the democratic values.

There are two perspectives from which we have worked on democratic participation in the past projects:

Under the perspective of media literacy, we did a project on different news channels, social media and fake news in different European areas (Norway, Spain, Austria, Turkey). We compared the most viewed channels, political situation and critically reviewed the impact that media and news channels have on political and democratic life. Both blended and authentic as a mobility in each other's countries.

We have organized a multicultural sports tournament in which all students from different countries had to decide on rules, schedules and other administrative aspects as well as participating in the events themselves. There was a lot of decision making and coordinating with partners made by the student's themselves and reviewed with a focus on social and democratic standards in the end of the project.

We are prepared and looking forward to do similar projects in the future and would love to include British schools as partners. Look us up and send an email to our school. We will certainly reply!

reithmanngym@tsn.at

Best, Magdalena, Theresa & Jonas

We would love to continue working on democratic values in a twofold way.

First, we would like our students to get to know and value public institutions, such as city councils, youth centres or libraries, which help bring different communities together.

Secondly, we usually ask our students to reflect critically on their personal contribution to these democratic values and compare it with their partner's school attitude. This can be done by means of presentations, questionnaires (google forms), interviews and so on.

At a time when distrust towards politics and when critical thinking skills are threatened by AI and misinformation we think this is an essential human skill we can't afford to lose.
