Mazepus (2016) explains how hybrid regimes rely on their vision of government as a legitimation strategy for their undemocratic behavior. This is to promote a voluntary transfer of power, or as I would describe, a sort of half-effort democracy, where a regime by dictating its vision of what it thinks the people wants assumes it has popular support.

Therefore, we have the case of Daniel Ortega. I've mentioned in other Padlets about my fascination with the Sandinistas. I do have a disdain for Daniel Ortega, however. Nonetheless, in the video we see a yearly celebration of the Nicaraguan Revolution. This is a government sanctioned event on part of the FSLN and is carefully crafted event. The Sandinistas, as the ruling party of the government, put a lot of effort into this yearly event as it plays into their legitimation strategy. It reminds civil society of the FSLN's role in the 1979 Nicaraguan Revolution. This event tells a narrative that the FSLN "deserve" their current position in government, having freed the country of dictatorship in the past.

I've seen multiple yearly showings of this event. Every year Daniel Ortega has a different speech, each one with the same message of anti-imperialism and nationalism, which ties back to the findings of Mazepus (2016). In the video, Ortega keeps on the European Migrant Crisis, which portrays the First World as morally corrupt and assumes Nicaragua--and the FSLN--as righteous. This speech works well for Ortega as he has a reputation as a former guerrilla. Ortega reminds the masses of the evils of imperialism as a sort of ad-hoc explanation for why the FSLN had to carry the revolution and are currently in power.

It pains me to see Daniel Ortega put so little effort into his speeches or into anything in these yearly celebrations.

Nonetheless, these yearly celebrations of the Nicaraguan Revolution are big propaganda events for the ruling FSLN party. I'm sure Daniel Ortega also sees it as such.
