One way of helping with this is setting up a designated study space (PS LOVE that you mentioned this in week 2 module!). Also, provide yourself breaks with rewards... it will make a HUGE difference.

In regard to family engagement... there are ways for families to stay engaged HOWEVER, as children get older they become more independent and engagement might look a little different. One thing I always say is that if I make every effort to stay engaged then I know I have done my part. For example inviting a family member to play a board game or go to lunch, or just sit and chat. We can't control others but if we are doing everything in our power at the end of the day we can be happy with the choices we made.

This topic is so important because as teachers, or childcare workers, we need to be able to identify possible dangers that may interfere with a child's safety, their optimal development, and their learning. If you think about it, children will spend the majority of their time either in a classroom, their home or their community. So it is so important that we make sure that they feel as safe as possible. this entire chapter on creating this sense of safety for our children can also be connected to the Hierarchy of Needs by Maslow, which is something that we've discussed in this class, as well as other HDF courses at URI. Epstein, through her research said that there were 6 different types of involvement for parents; volunteering, learning at home, communication, parenting, decision making, and collaborating with the community. Communication can help with the parent/teacher relationship that helps with the child’s development, and allows for the parent to help monitor the child’s education and progress when they cannot physically be in the classroom with the child. Volunteering is a great way for parents to show support for their child, and show that child that they want to make an effort in their child’s education. These are the two types of involvement that I specifically remember from my own life, and I remember being so excited that my parents wanted to come volunteer for holiday parties in my classroom. I also remember always being so eager to hear about my parent teacher conference, so that I could further my own education, and have another perspective on my education through my parents eyes! I am so very excited to have you and your child as a part of my kindergarten class at St. Michael’s School, in North Andover Massachusetts! My name is Melissa Cochrane and I will be your child’s teacher this upcoming year! This will be my fifth year as a teacher within the Saint Michaels's School faculty, and I am so thrilled to be your child’s teacher! 
I have been excitedly planning and preparing for this school year, with several different learning activities that I hope will benefit your child’s learning! We will be playing educational games, telling fun stories, as well as taking some fun field trips to allow your child some fun and educational changes of scenery! 
We have decided to incorporate technology into our curriculum this year, because we feel that it helps your child to learn in the most fun way possible! We feel that technology will not only benefit your child’s education, but will help to strengthen our relationship with you parents because it’s one of the easiest and fastest ways for us to communicate with you parents!
