Ratliff defines endless inventory as "not only a way of buying, owning, and arranging music-related objects and experiences in one's life, but also a distinct way of listening." Through this, one is able to evaluate a musicians work and understand how the musician feels about their work and themselves. Ratliff makes an example of Blair Jackson's collection of grateful dead tapes describing it as "love, and a kind of library science...all of it intrinsically valuable." Ratliff describes endless inventory as almost an art in which the listener takes in all or as much of a musicians work with the intention of understanding what lies beneath the surface. Ratliff briefly describes ones drive to build collections as a "want to corporealize it," and I can only concur with his statement. A collection is like the soul of the musician, and the soul can only be set free when complete. For example the collection of Drake albums is a storied and meaningful inventory into the life of this young artist.
