Not only physical, because it also represents the symbolic death of the Usher family and the mansion itself.

We can perceive it in Madeline's illness and premature burial, suffering of catalepsy that makes her appear dead for periods of time. As well as we felt Roderick's overwhelming fear of death, believing in a family curse that causes premature death, and contribuiting to his mental instability and sensitivity.

The mansion can be a symbol of death, with its deterioration, reflects the moral and physical decay of the Usher family. This aspect is an essential part of the story since it allows us to create a dark and suspenseful atmosphere that although it terrifies the reader, keeps them expectant of the story. An example of this is what the Narrator feels not only because of the characteristics of the house (exterior) but also entering it and how that gothic atmosphere increases with the time; however, this does not make him flee the house but rather keeps him expectant.

Throughout the tale, it is depicted how the last members of the Usher family line succumb to the pervasive darkness that has plagued their lineage for generations. As they meet their demise through enigmatic illnesses and curses, so too does the house surrender to the gradual decay that has haunted it for ages. The house becomes the ultimate symbol of the family's destiny.

This is such a bizarre family, lonesome, and removed from conventional norms that their mere existence takes on an eerie and supernatural quality. The remaining two family members, Roderick and Madeline, can be seen as two halves of a single entity, each unable to exist without the other. Ultimately, their deaths signify the end of the Usher family line. The intertwined history of the Usher family, the direct lineage descent, and their enduring features imbue the tale with a gothic atmosphere.

Firstly, the wall is described as having a "barely noticeable fissure" that gradually widens, reflecting the theme of decay and impending collapse. This symbolic deterioration is a common reason in Gothic literature, representing the moral and psychological disintegration of the characters.

Secondly, the oppressive and threatening appearance of the wall contributes to the atmosphere of fear and isolation. It stands as a physical barrier separating the inhabitants from the outside world, a feature often found in Gothic tales where characters are trapped in closed, nightmarish environments.

It is not only in the physical spaces but in the characters. The main characters portray these feelings of sadness, inner despair, and isolation that show how lost in life they were. Then, decay and ruin are mostly associated with physical spaces such as the house and outside the house; it was connected with death and decay, and there was no life surrounding it.

People who read the text understand the narrator has no intention of holding back what he really thinks about the situation. At every moment he shows fear and distrust for what he observes and although in theory, he is a sane person, all the factors related to the house give him a feeling that makes him distrust and fear the situation.

The crypt within the mansion is a dark, subterranean chamber where the members of the family are buried. It creates a gloomy oppressive atmosphere and the presence of it in the house enforce the theme of death, decay and madness in the story. It also symbolizes the fine line between being alive and death.

Madeline's death is uncertain. It is mentioned that she is catakleptic, a condition that produces a great mystery and represents the sublime in a certain way. This is because when she walks around the room, it is not possible to fully know certainty whether it is her ghost or she is there after a catakleptic state, which also reinforces the supernatural nature of her character.

Likewise, the way she is placed in the coffin is pure abjection because the noises herad implies that her own brother placed her there still alive.

On the other hand, the gothic setting and decay surround her death, as the noises coming from the place where she was "buried" contribute to the decay and mystery of the House of Usher.

Madeline's death

This character was "death" and buried under the house. However, Madeline was buried alive because of her disease, who seemed to be death. Including horror, death, and eerie, aspects that clearly characterized the gothic literature. Then, Madeline appears to be alive, and "returns to life" getting out of the tomb causing extreme horror on the story, and portraying the gothic fact of the old and death vs the new and alive present in ghosts mainly, as in this case, an alive corpse.

She is infected with the hereditary disease that in a certain mod seems to be in the Usher household. She feels the effects of it physically to the point of being bedridden and unable to do anything else. By relating to the gothic, Madeleine is in a physical and emotional decline, as she is in a state between life and death or "dead in life", which presents us with a deterioration of the character.

In the text the windows are described as small, dark and looking like eyes. In my opinion the author make that comparison since they show a house that is invaded by death and darkness inside, so the windows can be a sample of what is inside. Also because maybe there is hope outside, the things are different there and if you look out the windows you could have that glimmer of hope, things can change outside and look for something better.
