We don't let students simply take over from existing activities without developing them in some way. In the MYP equivilent yeargroups we introduce the skills and awareness via the ECA/CCA programme and a bespoke Global Issues Certificate which is modelled on the CAS portfolio components. This has helped parents to see why students do the things that we are encouraging them to do.
