The theme of this poem is that love is as beautiful as nature but it does not last forever.

Within the poem, Raleigh mentions that "flowers do fade" (17) and that "a heart of gall, is fancy's spring, but sorrow's fall" (21-23). Just as nature's beauty does not last, the love between two people eventually fades as well.

According to the poem's most well-known critic, S. K. Heninger, the Nymph is more figurative and philosophical while the Shepherd is more literal and concrete.

Heninger and other critics also note that, "Raleigh's poem betrays ambivalence, with sophisticated details like gold buckles and amber studs revealing the unavoidable contamination of the pastoral ideal by the worldly." In other words, they believe that his poem shows the mixed feelings between the two parties.
