The theory of hegemony was created by Antonio Gramsci, a Marxist. In terms of media it’s the companies controlling what is shown which enables them to have more dominance over citizen’s ideology due to the media encouraging them to follow the norms. Hegemony is present through people’s actions, such as minimally buying an item because an advert has told you to, or because the media shows you that it’s something you need.

First theorised by Antonio Gramsci, hegemony is a belief system which is created by the ruling class to control the behaviours of the working class. This is heavily expressed through the media - as a people the working class is very easily influenced by any and all platforms of media - advertising is a very good example of this. Advertising creates a false consciousness, leading people to believe that they not only want this product - they NEED it, and as a result of this they will buy it. Hegemony exists as nothing other than fuel for capitalism to continue running smoothly.

The word HEGEMONY derives from the ancient greek word 'hegemonia' meaning 'leadership' or 'rule' but it's usually associated with ideas about domination and control as in the means by one group dominates and controls another. A Marxist thinker, Anthony Gramsci (1891 - 1937) created the theory of 'Cultural Hegemony' which is the domination of a culturally diverse society, by the ruling class (Bourgeoisie) who manipulate the culture of that society—the beliefs, perceptions, values, and morals, —so that their imposed, ruling-class worldview becomes the accepted cultural norm. For example, the ideology of the bourgeoisie is being promoted and establish within the society through the media; They control what is being shown on the screens.
