The ability to communicate your ideas, in whatever form, whether it be written, verbal, visual, etc., is necessary for creating whatever change you would like to. And, the ability to read, whether that be literature, visual art, etc., is necessary for developing those ideas.

Literacy is the ability of showing your understanding of something through writing. Using the right grammar and punctuation also defines what literacy means. For example, summarizing a chapter of a book in your own words is a form of literacy. As we progress in technology we also have technological literacy in which we must be able to utilize technology to learn and communicate new ideas with others. With technology we've documented and shared more information about different culture's around the world which develops a new type of literacy: the ability to understand other's culture's and communicate about your own.
