Artist Statement

Liz Helgesen was born and raised in Peru where her curiosity about photography started. She is now based in Northern Virginia since 2006 and pursuing a career in Photography. She plans to get an AFA in Visual Arts to be able to transfer to a Photojournalism program in Washington DC. Liz’s passion and dedication to photography hasn’t faded through the years but grown stronger as she learns more about the craft while attending classes, covering local events, portraying people, capturing landscapes and streets, and learning more about light.

Photography lets me express and communicate how I perceive the world. I am open to trying all types of photography so I can build more experience in mastering light and composition. I recently started to print my own photographs and it has become part of my process of capturing a moment, doing any necessary edits, and finally having a artifact I can hold in my hands.

People, objects, infrastructure, nature— anything could inspire me to start the creative, and usually, fast process of capturing a moment in life.

My portfolio will represent a variety of photographs I have taken through the last 2 years. You will find movement and still life, color harmony and contrast, strong emotions and tranquility. In addition, there will be a couple of samples of my drawings and paintings from the process of becoming a better artist.
