The article drives many parallels to the importance of how the chapter emphasizes the impacts of information and communication technologies on organizations today. The article directly correlates with the chapter by stating how the use of ICT’s tends to open up communication and increase accessibility across the board in an organization. Communication such as e-mails increase lateral communication, contacts across organizational levels, and the flow of ideas compared to more traditional communication media. Though, it is important to note that information and communication technology has no universal definition, but instead Is a terminology that encompasses all types of devices, networking components, applications, and systems that an organization would use to allow for communication. The article goes even further in establishing its importance by discussing ICT’s economic development as well. According to the article, “ICT’s importance to economic development and business growth has been so monumental, in fact, that it is credited with ushering in what many have labeled the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Though, the usage of information and communication technologies is not universal and is not used evenly across the globe. While many countries are trying to adapt to more developed countries, there will always be more access and ease of use of ICT features in richer and better developed countries. This is something to keep note of when conducting international business and trying to communicate utilizing digital means. To put the concept into perspective, the World Bank estimated that out of the global population of 7.4 billion people, more than 4 billion don't have access to the internet. Additionally, it estimated that only 1.1 billion people have access to high-speed internet. Still, The World Bank, and other governmental authorities are trying to make strides in advocating policies and programs that try to establish and bridge the digital divide in differing countries by providing greater access to ICT.

This web article goes in depth about the three directions of globalization which is homogenization, polarization, and hybridization. As you read the article you can see it building in similar directions as the chapter objective about globalization and thinking critically on the matter. Traditionalism and insulation will no longer suffice if an organization wishes to broaden its scope. As the world barriers decrease, economic and cultural activities of organizations are taking root in several different perspectives globally. When multinational organizations based in Western societies, for instance, enter a new area, the organization brings with them a distinct set of values. In the western worlds, things like individualism, commercialism, separation of church and state, liberty, and laissez-faire economic, all concepts and clause that are alien to say Islamic, Confucian, Japanese, Hindu, and Buddhist culture. The same can happen vice versa.

The idea of cultural homogenization refers to a more common place outlook on society. Cultural diversity is not existing in one, central, and standardized way of thinking. You can see this wither companies such as Coca Cola. The idea of polarization is a thesis which warns that people in non-Western societies will be progressively more alienated and angered by this cultural invasion of globalization, leading to a more malicious world. Lastly, the article touches upon hybridization. The concept of hybridization emphasizes the mixing and sharing of cultures and the production of newer hybrid like cultures that come from it. Finding a healthy balance between preserving a sense of identity, home, and community whilst also living and acting with a global economic system is imperative for success.

Most jobs have a teamwork mentality but when I worked at Menards I was always really impressed about how important teamwork was for their company. At Menards workers are actually called team members not employees. Also even though all the departments are segmented out, cross training and helping out other departments was pushed heavily. I think this relates well to idea of Systems Thinking because even though Menards has broken up the departments so workers could specialize, the realized how important it was to keep the store working as one big team. If the departments worked separately, things would become very unorganized an some wouldn't make enough revenue to sustain themselves.
I think Systems Thinking is pretty common in most workplaces, it just isn't discussed in much depth because people just assume teamwork is just part of a job. That is why I always liked how Menards made it an important part of there values.

I worked as a Leasing Agent for a big apartment rental company here in Manhattan KS. I remember a time we were having a hard time generating traffic, which is people coming and looking at our units. We had tried almost everything we could think of, craigslist ads, follow up calls, apartments.com, and even the K-State housing fair. Even with all that effort we still weren't getting contacted. Finally we started thinking out of the box and decided to talk to current tenants about resident referrals. We made a resident referral incentive program that gave current tenants $100 if they referred someone who ended up signing a lease. This program has increased traffic by 15% in the last year. Even though we are spending a little more money by offering an incentive it has solved our traffic problem and made our loyal residents very happy.
I think this was a good example of how thinking creatively can help a business solve a problem even if they have to spend a little to do it.

I was working for an organization that had started to implement a more robust and easier to utilize intranet network system. Specifically, they were overhauling their internal email communications applications and technologies. By allowing for a more robust online email and documentation services, employees could now move documents around the organization rather than passing paper copies, and retrieve needed information from the company database. With this embrace of inter-networking, it helped rectify many of the communication errors that individuals were having because they could not easily locate and have access to specific documents when they needed it but they could do so in a timelier manner. By the organization understanding and implementing better usages of ICTS, it opened communications to a broader degree and increased accessibility of people in the office.

Globalization is becoming more and more predominant in today's business world. While I do not have any business experiences yet involving different cultures I have experienced homogenization while traveling out of country. My freshman year of college I went on a trip to Aruba. This country's predominant source of revenue comes from tourism (mainly people from the U.S. and Canada), so they try to cater to the typical lifestyles of the American culture. They drive American made cars, everything is mostly English, and the resorts have American restaurants and amenities such as Dunkin' Donuts. The cab drivers speak English and take American money also. One day while exploring the main port shopping village we wondered away from the main strip and stumbled upon a local hot spot for Aruban food. The owners were not used to tourist, barely spoke English, and had to calculate out the conversion from Florin to the dollar on an old calculator. This just goes to show that the two cultures can blend but can also hold their origins to be their own thus creating homogenization.
