Sexual division of labor is defined by the video talk as- specific tasks allocated on the basis of sex. This is a picture I found in the boys clothes section at a store. This shirt shows a white boy with four different trucks around him. I chose this picture to relate to Sexual division of labor because the shirt implies that these jobs are for boys. I also did not see any clothes that were gendered towards girls that had these trucks on them.

1

Norms are defined by the video talk as- rules of behavior that develop out of a groups values. This image is of me at work, dressed in COVID-19 personal protective equipment. I think this picture relates to norms, because the norms of PPE are changing. Before the pandemic, while working as a paramedic, nobody would wear a mask. The healthcare system in general values limiting the spread of diseases, and wearing masks and other gear is now normal. There are talks that wearing a mask will forever be required PPE in almost every healthcare setting, even when the pandemic is completely over.

2

The hat also says "Murica" on it. This hat is an example of Material Culture. Wearing this hat identifies the person as being a part of the society of the United States.

3

Culture shock is defined by the video talk as- the disorientation that people experience when they come in contact with fundamentally different culture can't rely on their taken-for-granted assumptions about life. This is a picture of my family in Europe sitting down at a dinner table. I chose this picture to represent culture shock because of how different the eating experience is there compared to in America. There were many things about the eating experience that were very surprising to me. For example, many places in Europe you have to pay for tap water. Also in many countries in Europe, customers do not tip for good service. I have heard that leaving a tip can also be seen as rude. It feels very awkward to leave a table and not leave a tip, even though it is completely normal in their country.

4

Gender Stratification in the video talk is defined as- ranking of sexes in such a way that women are unequal in power, resources, prestige, and presumed worth. This is a picture of a shot glass I saw. This shot glass was made to look like a woman's breasts. I think this is an example of gender stratification because the shot glass focuses completely on the breasts of women. This shot glass is saying that the most important area to focus a man's attention on is a woman's sexual body parts. When I saw this, there was also no other shot glasses which had a male body figure.

5

Discrimination is defined in the video talk as- an action. Unfair treatment directed at someone.
I was unsure what this address was until I looked it up. This is the infamous site where George Floyd was murdered by police. Since then, residents of the community built a memorial in the center of the intersection, which has shut down the road. This relates to discrimination because there is a disproportional amount of police use of excessive force towards black people. There are many instances of discrimination of blacks by police throughout America.

4. Who benefits from this?
The black community benefits from the memorial in the road, because the memorial has increased news coverage.

5. Who doesn't benefit from this?
Many other local residents do not benefit from this because a busier street is shut down. One news report stated that the memorial might be able to stay in the center of the road if the city builds a round about, but some of the local businesses would have to have their buildings destroyed.

6

7. Disfunction

The Video talk defines a disfunction as- Consequences that harm society. This picture is of a firefighter fighting the Caldor Fire.
Wild fires are a disfunction of civilization. Although it has not been determined what the cause of this particular fire is, in my years of firefighting experience, I have heard of a lot of reasons why fires are worse this day in age. One argument I have heard, which relates directly to a disfunction, is the current forest management practices are not beneficial to forest fires. Forests need to burn every several hundred years to clear out the dead and dying trees and make room for younger and healthy trees. Firefighters have been taught to put out fires as soon as they start, which in turn leaves a lot of fuel to burn when a big fire does happen (sorry for being lengthy, but it would be hard to explain in two sentences).

Another example of a disfunction with forest fires is PG&E. PG&E has started several large fires by power lines failing. PG&E is only intending on giving people electricity, but it is a very big disfunction.

4. Who benefits from this?
The forest will benefit from the fire, several hundred years from now.
5. Who doesn't benefit from this?
The people that own homes and property in the forest.

7

Institutional racism is defined by the video talk as- established, customary, and respected ways in which society operates to keep minorities in a subordinate position.
In this video, I want to use the example where Albertsons made a policy where employees are not allowed to speak Spanish. Albertsons was trying to make their employees act more white by enforcing policies.

2. Who or what is it for? Why was it created?
This policy was created in an attempt to make Spanish speaking employees seem more "American," in an attempt to keep the fallacious idea of being a white American as superior.

4. Who benefits from this?
Honestly, nobody benefits from this.

8

The Video talk defines Prejudice as- An attitude. A prejudging/preconceived idea.
This is a quote from George Zimmerman that he said to the 911 dispatcher. With minimal information about Trayvon, he assumed that he was "up to no good." Zimmerman later shot and killed Trayvon based on his prejudice.

4. Who benefits from this?
I feel like this is horrible to say, but I think America benefits from parts of this. Many people do not think that racism and prejudice still happens in America and this case was very eye opening.

5. Who doesn't benefit from this?
The family of and people directly related to this incident on both sides.

9

A secondary group, as defined by the video talk is- a larger, more remote, more anonymous, more formal group that is based on some interest or activity. This is a photo taken of people at the burning man festival. Many people go to burning man because they have similar values and beliefs about the world. Many people attend burning man to be a part of the secondary group.

2. Who or what is it for? Why was it created?
This festival is for the people that attend it. It is a festival for people to be themselves and create a temporary community of like minded people.

7. How does the meaning of this change depending on who is using or observing it?
I think that many people would think of burning man as a waste of time. Burning man values being less of a consumer, which would not benefit the rich.
