„Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted ist he most terrible poverty.“ Mother Teresa

Only a few people can and / or want to be lonely.
The average person needs to communicate with other people. If this doesn´t work, he's looking for a replacement. In the first place today are the pets, which are then often not anthropomorphized.
In the past, pets were not common and therefore people look for “replacement-beeings”. Regardless of cultures, beliefs or ages.
As a child I did not care if the stories of angels are true or not. They were told by the elders, so they were real.
At a time when there was no way to check data, in a time of almost infinite loneliness on the remote farms in Iceland, the presence of elves, trolls and hidden people is completely human.
The current wave of isolation due to lack of direct communication, due to the extreme media consumption as well as the impersonal mobile phone use - the same picture on the bus ride back to Reykjavik as anywhere in the world - revives the replacement communication with supernatural beings.
Elves, trolls and hidden people will not die out here in Iceland!

So mystical nature in Iceland, as mystical as its inhabitants. Elves, fairies, gnomes and trolls inhabit Iceland. Many residents are so convinced that, in addition to an elves school, there are also experts who plan on bypassing the streets so as not to disturb the mysterious inhabitants. What we saw today was a mere glimpse of the mysterious world of the hidden people worth diving into a bit more

We had a mystical walk through a tiny town. I thought we would make the elves walk through the forest but the hidden people live together with the inhabitants in the town and they even have a castle. I really enjoyed to listen to our guide, I felt like a child again listening to mystical stories. After that we also saw the hidden animals, the whales and the first puffin of the season. What a miracel day!

Trolls and elves have a lot in common with the Norwegian! Are just as unspeakable! But today I am fascinated by the two really big conifers in Elfenpark! Big and strong for Icelandic conditions. Must be a particularly magical place. And for me the trees of the year!

Julia

As nature appears to be really rough and extreme (though extraordinary beautiful and impressing) and one might become lonesome here in Iceland, people needed to have some spiritual support and a belief in some magical power. Either to entertain each other with stories or to rely on some faith.

I really enjoyed the story telling and that attentive listening and in the meantime each creating someone’s own pictures in his/her mind is what should get revived in school as well. Let your mind create pictures from what you hear. Challenge your thoughts, memories and attention and not just being spoiled with ready made pics.

Besides, from now on I will actually blame some elves for any of my lost things I cannot find anymore. That was such a good idea to have an excuse!

In many countries (mine amongst them) trees and forests are the sources for the magical creatures. In Iceland I couldn't find almost any on our first day so I began to wonder where would these magical creatures live or hide here. Nature shapes the countries' cultures and, after our walk in Hafnarfjórður, I began to understand a little bit better how Icelandic culture is closely related to its geological and geographical conditions. Now, in Iceland I not only see more rocks anywhere I look, but I do it in a different and more conscious way.

Mònica
Hafnarfjördur is a great way to show how people are encouraged to respect nature. Old believings passed down to new generations show us that we are not that important. We, as humans, are here because nature, and the beings who take care of It, let us live here, enjoy It, and be part of It. Let's respect and show gratitude to It.
