A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. All phobias are considered anxiety disorders, falling into the same class as PTSD and panic disorder as they are fundamentally based on fear. Causes of phobias originate from traumatic experiences in the past that later become triggered, developing into an intense fear towards something. An example of a traumatic experience could be surviving a dangerous hurricane, and once remembered, that traumatizing experience may trigger someone leading to the development of an intense fear for hurricanes, also known as Lilapsophobia. Physical symptoms include anxiety or a panic attack, such as a pounding heart, nausea or diarrhea, sweating, trembling or shaking, numbness or tingling, problems with breathing (shortness of breath), feeling dizzy or lightheaded, feeling like one is choking.
Children with a specific phobia may express their anxiety by crying, clinging to a parent, or throwing a tantrum. According to WebMD, "5%-12% of Americans have phobias. Specific phobias affect an estimated 6.3 million adult Americans." This shows how many people's lives are affected by any phobia, preventing them from living a normal life. There are over 100 types of phobias, each and every one of them taunting someone as each day goes by. It often comes to the point where life can become an endless round of defensive actions made to prevent an encounter with whatever serves as the focus of fear. Phobias are like falling into a well, and once fallen into the pit one cannot get out unless helped.

My overall opinion towards phobias is that most phobias are real such as Arachnophobia because spiders crawl everywhere and look scary. Other kinds of phobias are just fake and people experience stress which makes them think they have phobias. I do consider phobias as legitimate because many people do have phobias which can be serious at times, but some phobias are fake.
