I'm sure there are many different recipes for different doughnuts today, but a classic recipe is: Yeast dough (rich in eggs and butter), spices, dried fruit, and spices. The sweetness of the doughnut came from the fruit and sugar that was put into the doughnut.

Holes were eventually added to the middle of of the fritter to create a doughnut shape. At a certain point egg yolks started to become part of the dough. People had struggles with cooking the doughnut all the way through, but when the holes were being added to the middle, this helped with cooking all the way through. The hole invention is credited to Capt. Hanson Gregory.

Some people say the name doughnut comes from the nuts placed inside the dough to prevent being uncooked in earlier times. Others claim that the name refers to 'dough knots', which were a popular shape of olykoeks. ( I believe that these are the same as oliekoecken's, but maybe from a slightly different country). Doughnut can be spelled 'Donut' or 'Doughnut'
