Because Salmonella symptoms usually do not appear in a person until 72 hours after ingestion, Blaire had no idea that she was infected by a bacteria due to undercooked chicken at her dinner. Salmonella are gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli that can cause salmonellosis, a diarrheal illness in humans. Salmonella typhi is a bacteria that typically affects people who ingest contaminated foods or water. Salmonella typically live in the intestinal tracts of animals. Salmonella outbreaks are often associated with contamination of eggs, meat and poultry. Foods that are most likely to cause infection are due to undercooked eggs, raw or contaminated milk, contaminated poultry or in this case: undercooked meat.

Testing for Salmonella typhi is not common; often, an infected person is over the symptoms by the time the lab results come in. However, testing of the stools can determine if a person is infected with Salmonella. It typically takes 3 - 4 days to receive a result of the stool. Rarely, Salmonella infects a person's bloodstream; if the doctor suspects the bacteria has infected a person's bloodstream, a blood sample is used to determine. A person typically recovers within 4 - 7 days; however, if severe diarrhea occurs then a person may have to be hospitalized.

A person with Salmonella will need to make sure their fluid intake is adequate. Drinking plenty of fluids will help maintain hydration. In some cases, a doctor will prescribe antibiotics. The doctor normally prescribes antibiotics in severe cases or if the bacteria has entered or is at risk of entering the bloodstream. Antimotility drugs may also help reduce symptoms of diarrhea; however, use of these drugs sometimes cause patients to have diarrhea for a longer amount of time.
