There was a time when I had a significant conflict with my parents regarding their refusal to let me use the internet freely. They viewed technology as a potential threat, believing that it could lead to negative influences and distractions. This perspective created a gap in our understanding, as I saw the internet as a crucial tool for social connection and learning. The situation escalated when I wanted to join an online study group, but they insisted that I focus on traditional methods of studying. This disagreement not only strained our relationship but also affected my social life; I felt isolated from my peers who were engaging in discussions and sharing resources online. Psychologically, I experienced frustration and a sense of being misunderstood, as I craved the opportunities that the internet provided. Ultimately, this conflict highlighted the generational divide in our views on technology and its role in shaping social change.

This outlandish belief made me feel lonely and frustrated, especially as I watched my friends connect online while I felt left out. It was inevitable that these feelings would build up, but I realized my parents were only trying to protect me. By being empathetic to their concerns, I learned that discussing our differing views on technology could help bridge the gap between us. This situation taught me that talking openly can help us understand each other better, especially when it comes to technology.

We had backbone that it was going to be a good day, but my cousin wasn't able to use his electronics because of a bad grade he previously received. He asked his mom why, and an argument started to escalate. I could see tears brewing upon his eyes due to the frustration that he was feeling, but he felt like he wasn't able to express his feelings because of his confusion. I felt empathetic and decided to console him. I told him that situations like these are inevitable. We then went on to play outside and had a lot of fun together.

They believed it was dangerous and often expressed their concerns in a way that felt outlandish to me. Their worries seemed so prominent that they prohibited my access entirely, which left me feeling isolated from my friends who were connecting online. I craved that social interaction, and their decision really diminished my ability to feel included. Despite their empathetic intentions, I felt caught in a tug-of-war between respecting their rules and wanting my own independence. This struggle not only strained our relationship but also made me feel lonely and disconnected during a time when I needed those connections the most. It took a while to bridge that gap, but eventually, we found a way to communicate better about the internet and its importance in my life.

They believed that online platforms were too sophisticated and dangerous for my age, dismissing their inevitability in modern social life. I tried to explain how being online was important for establishing friendships and staying informed, but their rigid stance only escalated the situation. I felt completely isolated, as many of my peers were building connections that I was missing out on. Emotionally, it was hard to tolerate their refusal, especially since it seemed compassionate to allow me to use the internet in moderation. The conflict left me feeling out of place socially and led to a significant gap in understanding between us.

Due to the drastic changes in the kids mentally and physically, this causes confusion in their emotions, which results in arguments and conflicts. I suddenly found myself in a heated argument with my mom, it started to escalate quickly but I managed to keep calm since it was inevitable to try to convince her and to get out of her punishments. It was prominent that a lot of parents re strict about school work and they would do anything to make you study more. After the argument was over she prohibited me from using my phone for a week until I focused on school work more. Moreover my mom is like my backbone so I had a bad gut feeling about this which made me go and apologize for the argument.

Obviously the conflict was escalating however at the time I had no clue what was occurring behind closed doors when I rang the doorbell my cousin answered the door, immediately I saw many things scattered across the floor when I asked what had happened I got a long answer, apparently my cousin had gotten a bad grade and was banned from using any electronics and had threw a tantrum he attempted to make me feel empathetic for him however he didn’t have any backbone. He had made a mistake and it was his fault and at best I would just calm him down I sided with his parents since he would have to improve drastically. After focusing on his work he was able to turn his grades around all while being allowed to use electronics, he was joyous thanking me many times.

This decision escalated into a significant conflict, as I felt isolated from my friends who were using the internet. Despite my attempts to manage the situation with a calm conversation, explaining how important it was for me to use the internet because it can help me with schoolwork, their stance remained inescapable. The absence of an online presence strained my social life, leaving me feeling frustrated and misunderstood. I tried tolerating their opinion while struggling with feelings of loneliness. this conflict not only affected my social interactions but also negatively affected psychological health, forcing me to confront the sophisticated balance between parental guidance and my desire for independence.

Joanne Stern emphasizes that conflict between parents and teens are inevitable, so she can keep reinforcing the idea that we should make every fight count by instilling in them a way to deal with their emotions and learn to defend themselves. Conflicts also make parents understand their teen's mindset, and the capability of being patient and empathetic towards them. She wants the parents to view conflict not as a negative but as a positive. This however clashes with traditional parenting because back then talking back to parents was very uncommon out of fear whereas nowadays you can usually do it without much drawback. This difference can also be attributed to the rise of technology which can expand a teenager's knowledge past those of the parents themselves.

She believes that making every disagreement count helps teens manage their emotions and learn to assert themselves. Conflicts also enable parents to better understand their teens, fostering patience and empathy. This perspective contrasts with traditional parenting, where talking back was uncommon due to fear. Nowadays, teens often feel free to express themselves, a shift influenced by technology that expands their knowledge beyond that of their parents.

These arguments can help teenagers express their feelings more clearly, giving parents a better understanding of their emotions. This, in turn, gives parents the chance to provide helpful advice that can deepen their bond. The text highlights this by stating: “Fighting is also a parent’s chance to say to teenagers ‘I want you to have your own thoughts and feelings, even when they clash with mine.
