People always tell me that Africa is poor, and did I ever live in a hut or seen wild animals. It annoys me that Africa is represented as a poor continent in media all around the world. There was a time someone said the n word, and I was told that I'm a snitch for reporting that person. Another issue that is not related to Central, was when liking black girls became a trend, and I felt disgusted or black boys saying they won't date a black girl. -Ajibola

it was scary at first, i wasnt used to the environment or seeing all the diversity. i came from a middle school that had little funding and was predominately black so it was a very different experience. central was the first place ive had someone touch my hair without my permission, which was crazy to me.

Being black at central is a complex experience for me. There is really no place in Central for one to feel like they ¨belong¨ if you attend the school. That is something I go through a lot at Central. I always have to worry about how I present myself. Do not use slang around people, those gold hoop earring make me look ¨ghetto¨, the lip gloss is too much, my hair is too big for people sitting behind me, I cant have a straight face or I am considered ¨stank¨ or have an attitude. If I speak up for my self I give off ¨aggressiveness.¨

being black at central makes me feel like an "other". Idk how to explain it clearly but it kinda feels like im a side character when im surrounded by my non-black peers, especially non minorities. It's definently better than most communities but I still think the subtle disregarding of POC voices, shying students away HBCUs, shying POC away from ap and ib programs and other opportunities plays a big role in it. Also non POC students kind of ignoring these issues and acting like everything is fine really rubs me off the wrong way.

I was very appreciative of how much diversity there is at Central but I was also very intimidated because I'm multiracial and seeing that there are so many different clubs and groups of people I didn't know which one I belonged to so I ended up not joining any at all out if fear that I would be betraying the other aspects of myself by choosing one.
