The name states what they are. They are verbs used to indicate an action that is happening in the present, so right now. Here are some facts about them:
  • -ER: They make up around 80% of all the verbs in french. This is very great as it means that you have to conjugate all of them in one simple manner. There is only one exception of conjugation in the -ER verbs, and that is "Aller" (To Go).
  • -IR: They are the second most used Verb, and also have patterns in which you conjugate. However, they have many more exceptions compared to -ER verbs. They are only very slightly conjugated like -ER verbs.
  • -RE: Verbs that end in -RE are the third conjugation type of verbs. There are a very limited number of these verbs but are still present. They are conjugated slightly similar to -ER verbs.
