The meaning of "sustainable" is "to be able to maintain." Meanwhile, "Sejahtera" is a Malay word that translates to "peace," "prosperity," "well-being," or "harmony" in English. It is often used to convey a sense of balance, health, and happiness, both on an individual and societal level.

Upon visiting the Dar Al-Hikmah Library, we dropped by the iArchives Gallery, which exhibits the establishment and traditions of IIUM that align with Sejahtera for sustainable development. The gallery features items such as the graduation robe, a poster depicting the history of the IIUM Song, and photos showing the early development of IIUM and its ongoing activities, like the graduation ceremony and Taaruf Week tradition.

The graduation robe- symbolizes the completion of a graduate's academic journey. It appreciates the hard work and effort required to earn the title. Although the fields of study pursued by the graduates may differ, the uniformity of the robe creates a sense of equality among the graduates. By exhibiting graduation robes, it preserves the cultural heritage of IIUM tradition that aligns with the Sejahtera concept in terms of holistic well-being and educational dimension.

IIUM song- students may not realize the importance and value behind our university anthem, the IIUM Song. The lyrics represent IIUM’s motto: to nurture good Khalifah, to create positive changes in the community, to polish Islamic culture and practices, and to promote peace and harmony. Now, the IIUM Song is sung by many students and staff, indirectly vowing to be the best they can be. We can relate this to SDG 4: Quality Education. The IIUM anthem is a signature of our university, one of the best Islamic universities in the world. Thus, it carries a good image and reputation globally.

Taaruf Week- a significant introduction for new students. The memories and experiences will always remain with them. Taaruf Week is an important formal week filled with essential talks and activities. During this week, students are introduced to the university’s rules, available services (OSem, OSHBE, DBSB, etc.), road directory, uniform bodies (SISPA, PALAPES, etc.), and clubs (CITRA, etc.). Not to be missed is the Bai’ah Ceremony, where all new students pledge and are officially declared as IIUM students. Through these activities, students may feel welcomed and well-informed. It is also a way for students from different kuliyyah to get to know each other and strengthen bonds within the IIUM community.

1. Great facilities in classroom: In each classroom, there are projector, computer, speakers, whiteboard, microphone, air conditioners, and as simple as tables and chairs. Our university offers convenient access for students to gain knowledge comfortably. Thus, we as a student should appreciate these blessings and use it wisely; by using it to its maximum capacity and study well. This relates with SDG 4; Quality Education, promoting opportunities to seek knowledge no matter the age and level of study. To touch the sentimental motto of UIA; nurturing good Khalifah for the Ummah, we shall not take this opportunity for granted and always seek the best with pure intention.

2. The iconic chair of UIA: We saw the table in the Sejahtera Gallery and we have some insights on the history of the wooden chair plus table. This chair is one of the image of UIA sustainability; the chair is widely being used in the campus and only available in UIA. The chair is convenient too, multipurpose for an instant class. Despite the material, the wood is very durable and solid strong. Almost all of the chairs have no scratch or damage, which is surprising. Hopefully, students can continue to sustain the iconic furniture by utilising it properly.

3. The classroom itself is also a public facility of the university that contributes to sustainable development. With the existence of the classroom, it is easier for the lesson session to take place and thus the teacher can teach easily and the students can get a suitable place to gain knowledge. In fact, it can also be a place to discuss with each other about global issues with its individual actions, from different perspectives and backgrounds.

Aside from that, university is a place of formal learning. Therefore, classroom is the main facility of UIA which needs to be maintained in quality to facilitate the learning process to proceed smoothly.

We have submitted our project proposal via email. Our project will focus on waste management in Mahallah Nusaibah, specifically tackling SDG 13, 14 and 15 concerns.

Our initial plan is to collect disposable waste such as paper and tins, then bring it to the nearest waste disposal service. By this, we can contribute our efforts to improve the waste management that is faced nationally and even globally.

Arising concern: Each waste brought will be exchanged with money value, up to its weight. Our concern is whether we will give the money back to the person who gave the waste, which can be handful and will require financial controller, or simply donate it.

Mahallah Nusaibah - We chose the mahallah as our location because it is where we live and it is very important for us, the students as an agent of change, to appreciate sustainability in our mahallah environment.

* IIUM is famous for its green scenery, including the Mahallah Nusaibah environment. There are trees around the mahallah that have not been cut down. Making the mahallah atmosphere cooler and more comfortable. Maintaining and protecting green spaces is essential for enhancing campus biodiversity, regulating temperatures, and improving air quality. Residents of Nusaibah can encourage to avoid tree cutting and planting trees. This aligned to SDG 15: Life on Land, which emphasizes on protecting and restoring the ecosystem.

* The recycling bin: Students can throw recycle wastes without worrying about contributing to the mass landfill. This relates with SDG 13: Climate Action. Inappropriate waste disposal/management have become a national- even global concern. One of the common way to tolerate with discarding waste wrongly is by disposing in recycling bin.

* MPH: The Mahallah also provides space for students to do Riadah activities. The multipurpose hall in Mahallah Nusaibah offers space serving as a hub for activities such as fitness sessions, academic events, and skill-building workshops, promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing. This fosters community engagement among residents which promotes sisterhood among Muslims. The hall also supports cultural and religious gatherings which promotes sisterhood among Muslims. Hosting events within the Mahallah reduces the need for transportation, contributing to sustainability by lowering the campus’s carbon footprint and encouraging resource efficiency.

In short, as students living in Mahallah Nusaibah, we are not just residents but stewards of sustainability. Our actions today not only improve the environment of our mahallah but also inspire a culture of sustainability that extends beyond campus life.
