Kirby, the main character, Evelyn Fallow, is projected to have a sad, yet very calm and positive personality. Throughout the story she is riddled with personal issues, things like the passing of her family, her work in a match factory lead to Phossy Jaw, and her job entitlement as a maid to a man named Joseph, known as the "Elephant Man." She spends the story trying to work as a nurse but becomes a caregiver to this man, who has such a disfigured appearance he has been cast out of society. Evelyn battles this, her own disfigurements, and the loss of her family, but precedes with positive attitudes about life, pushing onward. The story follows her tasks at a hospital, that, due to her age, had to make her a maid instead of a nurse. Her main task in the story is to tend to a disfigured man named Joseph, or the "Elephant Man." Evelyn shows doubt and skepticism at first that this job is right for her, but eventually she builds a friendship to their many things in common. Things like favorite books, enjoyment in music, and their shared seclusion from society. This condition have common ground for her task at the hospital, taking care of a man named Joseph Merrick. Joseph is extremley disfigured, which made society fear him, calling him the “elephant man.” Understanding that he needs care, the hospital watches after him, placing nurses (and Evelyn) on his watch to help him. Evelyn eventually becomes aquatinted with him, but gets to know another man named Charles Weaver, a friend of Merrick. Weaver then asks Evelyn on a date, which creates the conflict of Evelyn’s self confidence. If they enjoy things like overcoming society and its obstacles, a bit of murder, and the journey of acceptance, it would be an intriguing and interesting read for them.
