How did you do during the Harkness discussions?
I believe that I spoke a little too much, although I did try to stimulate conversations for those who did not speak. I think that my commentary really built off of others' and was insightful. I do wish that I could have shifted to a different global issue, but I was unable to as everyone kept going back to the original issue of gender-related societal pressures.

    1. How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel. 
    Morrison's intentional placing of the scene where Sethe kills Beloved is meant to garner sympathy and empathy  for her actions, enabling the reader to understand the motivations of her actions and making her seem the underdog in the situation.

    Time and Space

    1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.

    The environment around the events that occur in Beloved (including the Fugitive Slave Act) is important to the overall reception of the novel as it helps the reader empathize with the actions of the characters as they are able to understand their motives, whether it be desperation or fear, given the times that this took place in. Also, since the novel was released after the civil rights movement, people are generally more receptive to such an inside view on the difficulties suffered by the African American community in America during this time of strife and division between the North and South, distinctly separated by their views on slavery.

    The novel gives insight into the issues that trouble each of the characters, male and female, to demonstrate the similarities as well as differences in the effects that their pasts (slavery) have on their individual identities.
