Hitler wanted to launch a counter-offensive to go through the allied armies in the Ardennes region of northwest Europe. He wanted to recapture Antwerp in Belgium. This battle  was basically fought because the Germans attempted to push the allied front line west from Northern France and Northwestern Belgium.
