The biggest takeaway I had was regarding the information I read about vicarious traumatization, which happens when one repeatedly hears troubling stories about extremely stressful events. I never truly considered just how important it is for the helpers in our communities, including counselors, to get support for the trauma they have seen or heard.

I have experienced these feelings during my twenty-year teaching career, and I know they won't completely go away when I become a school counselor, in fact, they could be worse if I am not careful.

Taking care of yourself first is the only way to effective way to take care of others. Understanding how stress affects you and documenting when certain symptoms occur is one way to help combat stress or burnout. To help prevent this from happening in the first place, or at least to help make these symptoms lessen, make sure to put your physical and mental health first by exercising, getting the proper amount of sleep, practicing positive self-talk, maintaining a healthy diet, and taking time to relax and unwind.
