He was the grandson of a slave. At the age of nine, he and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, for better opportunities, as part of the Great Migration, when 1.5 million African Americans left the segregated South for the urban and industrial North. However, when he firstly entered the competitions, he was under the pressure of the racist ideology that the black athletes couldn't compete on the same level as their German counterparts. However, he did not let these thoughts stop him but on the contrary, he entered won four gold medals, a medal for every entered competition. In addition, even the pressure of two-foot faults, disqualifying him for just one more was not enough to stop him from winning, but it made him focus more on his dream. Despite his troubles and difficulties during growing up, he never gave up and achieved success despite anything.

But, even by having the best condition, there have been a lot of times when I have thought of giving up and not continue training to become a professional soccer, since I would have gotten very tired from the school and training, and even because I spent a huge amount of time training and following a regime to become a professional soccer player, I would not have a lot of time to spend with my friends and do everything they used to.
