Plants need 4 things to survive: (water, light, nutrients, space) 
Plants have adaptations to help them meet those needs.  

Read your Science Textbook (hard cover) p. 30-31. 

Assess: Turn to your partner and discuss FOUR things a plant needs to survive.

 Review the basic needs of a plant.  (water, nutrients, light, space)

 Plants have structures that help them meet those needs.

Predict: How do waxy leaves affect a plant's ability to retain water?
Waxy Leaves Demo: SW cut 2 leaves out of green paper.  Spray leaf 1 with water.  Place in window and time how long to dry.  Spray leaf 2 with water and fold inside wax paper.  Observe how long to dry.  

Waxy leaves on some flowers help them retain water by  (see pictures)

Water/nutrients travels through the stem to give the plant what it needs to survive  

 Roses have thorns to keep predators away (deer/humans) (see pictures)  

 Any other plants that can defend themselves?  Cactus

 Assess: Plant parts and functions sort.  Glue on construction paper.

Cover: Draw a picture of a flower.  Label all the parts.  Use binder p. 7 to glue the functions of each part.
