News Literacy requires us to gain certain skills that help us determine whether what we are reading is actually news or just opinion. Now more than ever it is crucial that we gain these skills as we see differing news articles on a daily basis. If we are able to critically think, and differentiate between worthy and unworthy news articles we can decide what is factual news and what is propaganda. News Literacy requires that we analyze the validity of articles so that we can sort through what is reliable, and what is not.

https://www.centerfornewsliteracy.org/what-is-news-literacy/

Would you be nervous to hand your child car keys and let them drive with no instruction? Howard Schneider says that is exactly what we are doing when let our children roam the internet without giving them the tools to sort real articles from fake news. The article goes on to discuss the potential threats news literacy poses if we do not teach children to decipher between real and fake. Consequences might include misinformed voting choices, and even effect a person's well-being considering all of the fake health related articles circulating the internet. Schneider gives some tips and tricks on how we can better prepare our children to differentiate between what is real and what is fraudulent.

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/teach-kids-spot-fake-news-165728617.html

News Literacy was not something that I was overly familiar with prior to doing this project. I was aware of the term "fake news" and had taken notice of how frequently it is used nowadays. I am so glad that I have a better understanding of what news literacy is all about. I think it is incredibly important to discern fact from fiction, and even more important that we educate our students on how to do this. I am certain that we can find ways to implement this into our curriculum so that we give students the tools to separate legitimate news from the fake propaganda. I think it is especially important given how far we have come with technology, and due to the influx of information we receive every day. When viewing the news is as simple as a swipe to the left or right on your smartphone, it is important that we educate students on how to muddle through the nonsense!

Netiquette seems like a common sense idea to me. We have etiquette ideas for how we should behave in everyday life, at the theater, in public and many more, so of course we should have some decorum online as well! I think the sooner we begin educating children about these ideas, the more seamlessly we can incorporate it into our everyday online presence. With all of the issues with bullying I think now more than ever it is necessary for children to learn about respectful internet practices from a young age. Perhaps we can cut cyber bullying down if we educate children on what respectful internet use is.

To help my students understand News Literacy we would inspect different stories and articles. Prior to this activity we would discuss some ways that they could decide if what they were reading was real or fake. Around the classroom at different stations I would have fake news articles, and valid news articles. They would rotate around the room in small groups with a sheet to record their answers, and try and decide if the article at their center was a real news article or a fake news article. Once every group had reached every station we would come back as a class and compare our data. Hopefully some of their answers are different. This would help illustrate that sometimes sorting fact from fiction can be very challenging.

Overall I found this project to be very informative. So much of netiquette seems like second nature to me, however I am sure that is not the case for everybody. I would like to think that part of good netiquette comes from having good etiquette and respect in your everyday life.
Teaching our students about news literacy and helping them separate fake news versus real news is really important. Considering the amount of division in this country as of late, now more than ever we must give students the skills to do this. I am also glad that I got to know the ins and outs of padlet! I found it very user friendly, and I think this is definitely a forum I could use with students. I enjoyed the creativity, and am glad this is another tech tool I will have under my belt when I am teaching!

I think that netiquette is something very important that we should be teaching our students! We all know and teach the basics of etiquette in real life, so it is important we teach the rules of etiquette for when you're online. In person, we know to have manners, treat people with respect, and treat people how we want to be treated. Bullying is a very serious issue, and it can happen online. If we can teach our students how to behave nicely, on and off the computer, I think that cyberbullying will start to become less of an issue. The more we teach netiquette, the more the students will begin to realize that it is wrong.

News literacy is very important, and not many people know about it. There is so much trouble with the news today, so it is vital that everyone learn how to tell if what you are reading is factual, or just an opinion. "Fake News" is a term that most people are very aware of, but a lot of people aren't aware of news literacy. If we can teach our students, and other people, what news literacy is and how to understand it, there will be a lot less "fake news." Technology has also become such an instrumental part of teaching, so having our students understand that not everything they read online is true is very important.

For my lesson on netiquette, I would have my classroom split up into partners. The students would both write a fake email, or message, with poor netiquette. Then, they would switch with their partners and correct the message. This will teach the students what not to say online, and also how to realize when someone is using poor netiquette. Once the students have corrected each others work, they will then write messages of good netiquette, so they can learn what they should be saying online.
This lesson idea was taken from https://websitebuilders.com/how-to/lesson-plans/netiquette/.

I have realized that sometimes even I don't use the correct netiquette, and I am definitely going to change that. I think now since technology is becoming such a crucial part in the classroom, teaching our students about netiquette and news literacy should be introduced into everyone's curriculum.
I also enjoyed being able to use Padlet and find a new way to relay information to the students. I think overall this project has made me think about what I am going to do as a teacher and how I will go about teaching them these very important lessons.
