During the activity, students were asked to write a letter describing their experience visiting a tourist destination in Guarinocito, using the past tense to narrate their adventures and learnings. We hope you enjoy this lesson and that it helps you improve your use of the past tense in English!

During my teaching practice, the head teacher assigned me to work with Thomas, a child with autism. From the beginning, I found it difficult to capture his attention and get him to understand the topic, as he was distracted, left the room, and didn't respond to my instructions. This caused me frustration and despair.

To address this challenge, I decided to research autism at home and ask his classmates about their interests. I discovered he liked certain anime, so I prepared activities with images of his favorite characters, as well as colored markers and games for when he felt exhausted. By applying these strategies in the next class, Thomas was able to learn the vocabulary for the topic in question.

Self-Assessment

1. Why was this incident significant for you?

It was significant because it allowed me to understand the importance of adapting teaching to the individual needs of students. It also helped me develop patience, empathy, and creativity in teaching.

2. What happened immediately before the event?

Before implementing the new strategies, I had tried to teach Thomas the same way I taught the other children, without positive results. I felt frustrated and lacked effective tools to capture his attention.

3. What happened immediately after the event?

After implementing the adapted strategies, Thomas showed greater interest in the activity and was able to learn the vocabulary.

4. How did he react at that moment?

I felt relieved, excited, and motivated to see Thomas respond favorably.

5. What is your interpretation of this event?

This event taught me that every student is unique and that it is the teacher's responsibility to find ways to connect with them.
