Hypothesis: The termites will be more likely to follow a darker line on the paper.
Null Hypothesis: The termites will not follow any line.

Prediction: The termites will gather to the black sharpie line more quickly than any of the lighter lines.

Experimental Design: We created a constant pattern using different types of lines for the termites to follow on separate pieces of paper and measured the amount of termites that gathered to each line in 10 second intervals. The average number of termites on the line after a 60 second period was used to infer the termites attraction to the line.

Independent variable: Type of line
Dependent variable: Average number of termites after 60 second period

Results: The termites were most attracted blue pen line and were least attracted to the pencil line.

Conclusion: Our hypothesis was disproved and further experimentation is needed.

Hypothesis: Termites will follow a shape used with an ink pen.
Null: Termites will not follow a shape used with an ink pen.
Prediction: termites are attracted to shapes drawn with dark utensils. Ex. black pen, black sharpie, pencil
Experimental design: Design a trial using 10 termites dropped onto three different circles: one ink pen circle, one pencil circle, and one sharpie circle. Three rounds for each type of utensil.
Results: NONE of the termites followed the pencil drawn circles or the sharpie drawn circles for all 3 rounds. Instead, all 10 termites followed the pen drawn circles for all 3 rounds.
Conclusion: Termites DO follow shapes used with an ink pen.
Independent Variable: Type of utensil used
Dependent Variable: Number of termites after each trial.

Hypothesis: There is a scent in the ink that attracts the termites.

Prediction: The termites will only follow the ink, regardless of the color.

Experimental Design: We took five pieces of paper and folded up the edges to help keep the termites on the paper. We timed each trial at one minute and 45 seconds. We tested the same three termites on each paper.

For the control, we placed three termites on a blank piece of paper and observed their activity.

For each sheet of paper, we drew a figure eight, and placed the termites away from the figure. We waited a minute and 45 seconds to observe a pattern or lack thereof. We used pencil, blue pen, red pen, and a sharpie to draw the figure eights.

Results:

Control: no pattern

Blue ink: all follow pattern

Pencil: none follow pattern

Sharpie: none follow pattern

Red ink: one follows pattern, two do not

Conclusion:
The results were inconclusive. The blue ink was followed but the red was not. Sharpie also has ink but was not followed. Further experimentation required.

Hypothesis: Termites will follow a path due to a specific substance.

Prediction: The termites will be more attracted to the paths made from pen.

Experimental Design: Multiple circular paths were drawn using different colored pens, pencils, and a black sharpie. Each sheet of paper had paths made from the same substance, but with different colors. The Termites were placed on the sheet of paper and their movements were observed by recording the amount of time the termites spent following the path.

Results: The termites only followed the paths made by the pens however the color of the pen did not have an effect. They ignored the paths formed by the other substances on the other papers and just moved in sporadic directions.

Conclusion: There is something in the ink of the pen that attracts the termites and causes them to follow a path formed by it.
