The men wounders "who could it be visiting late at night". He takes a while to open and think and thinks what to say when opening. For a second he paused and hoped it was he's love lenore, but while opening the door there was no one. It was dark no one to be found, he thought it was just the wind and closed the door. In just seconds something flew in, and perched above he's chamber door. The speaker realizes it's a raven and starts to question it by asking if he will ever get over his grife, and if he will be reunited with lenore again.
