I loved the garden education that included composting on sight. There were crowdfunding campaigns to introduce solar curriculum by installing solar panels near the garden with projects based on teaching about energy usage and photosynthesis by plants. There were many instances of community resilience being shown by growing food in community based gardens. I think what I found most inspiring is that even in the midst of a terrible Covid year, where people couldn't get together that gardens thrived, and the dissemination of online learning and gardening exploded. There was one garden educator that commented with a 200% increase in interest from the previous year. You have to keep this momentum going and keep growing despite the challenges.

There were examples of people starting out small, and schools that have huge resources, and folks in the middle. Gardens can be grown in the classroom, lessons like Bean in a bag, to starting seeds indoors for kids to bring home plants for holidays. I love the stories of kids taking home veggies they planted themselves and sharing that excitement with parents and siblings.
I think having dedicated committed people who are unwilling to let obstacles stop them from growing and sharing that knowledge is key to any successful program, since there will always be obstacles. Getting the kids involved in the garden, (not just the teachers) is another sure way to get them excited about learning in nature. That excitement is contagious and builds upon itself. Some specific examples, worm bins that kids create, decorate and maintain, and use the worm castings in the garden areas. Compost bins that kids collect and add their lunch scraps to , water, and turn over occasionally to learn how to make productive soil teaches them numerous processes. Sending activity kits home during Covid so they can work on projects while they are staying at home doing on-line classes. Uploading videos on YouTube so they can follow along with lessons/ learning and having guidance from garden educators is invaluable during this Covid crisis. However the learning is shared, just like in this course, we are learning, it is so important and vital to so many, especially our children who will inherit this earth. They need to understand how to value and protect it. The program leaders noticed the undesirable behavior and recognized that kids wanted to use their sense of touch. Instead of combatting this with more rules of 'no touching', they created an activity to paint rocks and put them in their own rock garden space. Then, when leaders noticed kids picking up the pea rocks, they were able to remind them that they can go to the rock garden and touch those rocks instead. When our group got together we were all fumbling around in the dark. One person had an idea and then went with it, but we didn't really have an overall plan or necessarily get the people or use the resources that we could have used.
