HAAT Model for Assistive Technology

The HAAT model helps ensure the client receives the device that is most appropriate for their unique needs and goals.

he HAAT model is a complete framework that helps a clinician understand the client, activity, and context for successful assistive technology selection and design. The HAAT model is made of four different components which include the human, the activity, assistive technology, and the context. Under the HAAT model, successful selection of assistive technology considers the human’s physical function, cognitive abilities, and emotional attitudinal factors. The client’s activity goal should be clearly defined, the activities frequency and duration, and the context should be addressed before a device is selected.(Cook & Polgar, 2015). By closely examining each of the four different components in the HAAT model, the client will receive the most appropriate device that will increase the client’s independence in their desired activities (Cook & Polgar, 2015).

Cook, A.M. & Polgar, J.M.
