From this I can infer that her mother relates to the painting and that she's thinking about her past especially because she turns away in pain. She is thinking of her own version of the story and the Narrator tugs on her arm to signal her mom to tell her the story developing in her head. I can infer from this that when she looks away from the painting she is thinking of memories from her past and how it relates to the Artist's drawing.
