The first known telescopes were refractories invented in the Netherlands in the early 17th century, using glass lenses that were used in terrestrial applications and in astronomy.

  His profession, before gaining worldwide fame for the creation of the telescope, was to manufacture lenses. He even had his own shop in Zeeland, a province of the Netherlands. There, Lippershey became a master of his art and was well known to everyone for his lens polishing skills.
There is very little data on the early years of the German's life. He was known by other names, such as Jan or Johann, and his surname was sometimes written as Lippersheim.
He moved to Middelburg, which is now a city that is part of the Netherlands, the country from which he adopted nationality years later. In this city, in the province of Zeeland, Lippershey trained in the optical trade and, over time, became one of the most important teachers in the region.
