Who am I and my interest:
Hello readers, my name is Amisha Narayan currently a tenth grade student interested in the topic of economics. The concept of development economics is interesting in the sense that so many factors influence its rise and fall making an impact on the status of region and how they may be seen by other developed or developing nations.

Climate factors:

Fiji consists of warm tropical climates. Maximum temperatures reach 31 to 26 degrees celsius and stay around this range for the entirety of the year. Winds in March to November from the Southeast bring fryer weather while the rainy season runs from December to April. On Average 15 cyclones will appear in a decade with only 2 to 4 actually causing severe damage and mainly occur in November to February.

During the wet season these cyclones are more likely to occur. In this time Fiji experiences its annual rainfall as results from the southerly movements of the South Pacific Convergence Zone. Smaller islands around Fiji receive less rainfall than the main larger based on location and size.

Geographical location factors:

Fiji is located in the South Pacific 3000 km away from Australia and 1930 from the equator. Out of the 322 islands (some being small limestone islets or coral cays) 105 are inhabited. The three main large islands include Viti Levu (Great Fiji) Vanua Levu (Great Land of the People) and Taveuni. Due to the location of these islands two of the following are extinct volcanoes formed overtime. The largest known river Rewa River (128km) located in Viti Levu is one of the thousands of rivers within Fiji, while Mt Victoria (same island) is the country's highest peak (1322m).

Social factors:

Fifty-one percent of the population is Fijian, and 44 percent is Indo-Fijian. There are small populations of Europeans, Pacific Islanders, Rotumans, Chinese, and persons of mixed European-Fijian ancestry

Fijian, Hindi, and English became the official languages after independence in 1970

Fijians have adopted chili peppers, unleavened bread, rice, vegetables, curries, and tea from the Indian population, while Indians have adapted to eating taro and cassava and drinking kava, a narcotic drink. However, the diets of the two groups remain noticeably different

The population is 53 percent Christian, 38 percent Hindu, and 8 percent Muslim, with small groups of Sikhs and people who profess no religion. The pre-Christian religion of the Fijians was both animistic and polytheistic, and included a cult of chiefly ancestors

Almost every Fijian girl learns the art of weaving baskets and mats for home and ceremonial use. Pottery is made by women

The traditional dance theater (meke) combines singing, chanting, drumming, and stylized movements of the upper body to recreate stories, myths, and legends

The labor force was 76 percent male and 24 percent female

Political factors:

From the British crown colony in 1874 to 1970 a system was set in place in a duel scene as a way to govern. This included the population as a whole and another exclusively for the Fijian ethical population

There are ethnically-based political parties as well as those that cross ethnic divides

The Fijian Association, an ethnic Fijian party established in 1956, formed the core of the Alliance Party, a temporary alliance (coalition) of conservative ethnically-based political organizations. The Federation Party grew out of conflict between Indo-Fijian cane farmers and foreign agricultural interests that culminated in a sugar-cane farmers' strike

Violent crime, alcohol and drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, unwanted pregnancy, and poor health are the major social problems

A developing economy otherwise known as an underdeveloped country are nations were industrial bases have not meet a specific standard or the Human Development Index (HDI) is lower than other countries. There is no universal criteria made to identify whether a country is developing or developed rather it refers to a nation's GDP per capita compared to other nations.

What trade agreements is this economy apart of? Positives and Negatives?

Fiji have a wide access to a number of agreed trade agreements. They are also pursuing bilateral trade agreements in Brazil, Korea, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Ethiopia. The Developing Country Preferences Scheme grants access for Pacific island exports into Australia. Some trade agreements include:

The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Trade agreement that allows trade to take place within Fiji Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands freely

The Pacific Island Countries Trade Agreement (PICTA) seeks to establish free trade amongst the fourteen Forum Island Countries (FICs). Seven Countries (Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu) have all the domestic requirements to make trade but are ready to. Four countries (Kiribati, Nauru, PNG and Tonga) are in stages towards this under PICTA. The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of Palau and the Republic of Marshall Islands are yet to accede to PICTA.

The Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (IEPA) provides duty free and quota free market access on all products from Fiji except for sugar and rice, which are subjected to longer transitional periods. They provide for improved rules of origin, especially in fisheries, and this allows investors based in Fiji to use fish caught using any boats exporting to EU. Provided that the fish is landed and processed (canned) in Fiji.

The South Pacific Regional Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement (SPARTECA) a non-reciprocal agreement that allows FIji and FIC’s to export products of Australia and New Zealand duty free. Fiji benefits from this which allows its textiles, clothing and footwear (except wool and wool blend fabrics) to be exported to Australia duty free under more favourable rules of origin

The Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER), which is a framework agreement for cooperation on trade and economic integration between the fourteen FICs and Australia and New Zealand, with a view towards the development of a single regional market. It also provides for assistance to FICs including Fiji, to enable them to address customs matters, standards and conformance and quarantine issues.

By Having Fiji involved in these arrangements shows that the Government is fully committed to trade liberalisation. This will help enhance the volume of Fiji’s trade with its regional trading partners as well as the rest of the world. Fiji is also trying to diversify its trading markets by engaging with other neighboring developing countries under the South-South Cooperation.
