- division between North and South according to religious beliefs: Islam in the North, Christianity in the South, tribal religions are suppressed

1914: attempt at unification of the country leads to protest against British rule

During the wars: Colonial soldiers fighting in both world wars, transportation of the conflict to the African continent

After the wars: treaties lead to Europe giving up some of the colonies, Nigeria’s remains a colony until 1963 and keeps English as an official language

- Arrival of Portuguese missionaries: Christianity mixed with elements from tribal religions

1500s:
- arrival of Islam from the North 
- renewal of slave trade, this time Slave triangle 
- rivalries between kinsmen leading to mass migration
- exploitation of human workforce

1800:
- arrival of the British: slave trade becomes the dominant aspect of British economy
- discovery of rubber for tires
- more slaves needed to trigger industrialization 
-slave serve as soldiers for the Empire, later they are taken to Britain to work as servants
- formation of large settlements, e.g. Lagos
