My initial fascination with faces and the acrylic medium produced a flurry of tests where angles, skin tones and proportions were explored. This piece of collected tests serves as a sort of introduction to the themes and styles I went on to discover. My early interest in water can be seen in the bottom left as well as my attachment to concepts concerning introspection through studies of the face.

This piece was conceptually inspired by Paul Klee’s piece ‘Arrow in the Garden’. Whilst the final pieces seem to diverge greatly from Klee’s work, the themes are still there in the form of strong contrast and stark division. The hard lines in the piece represent the groundwork of a garden which can bring order to that which wills to grow organically. This in turn, makes reference to the calming of the mind when indecision forced by change is dominant. In connection to my early pieces, this stems from themes of inner conflict and development.

This diptych was inspired by the difference between perception and reality. The water style strays from realism, becoming more graphic evoking illusion, whilst the face is smoother, more natural. This makes reference to the way in which people change over time, evolving from the moment in which they were photographed to who they are now. The water is fluid, almost dizzying, whilst the face appears clear and unchanged. The water metaphor connotes permanent growth whilst the face suggests elusive appearances.

This work studies the divided feelings of skepticism and curiosity that come with adopting religion. The fluidity of the smoke and ripples evoke malleability whilst the harsh transition from black to white suggest a more polarized change. Whilst the smoke in gold represents sin, it also forms a subtle cross. Confusing finding faith with finding fulfillment is something I've often struggled with. Would this change feel natural? In the second piece, the resurfacing of the gold as highlights in the water represents the controversial view that claims the washing away of sin comes through conversion.

These works are in watercolor in order to evoke the ephemeral quality of a moment. The uniqueness of an instant can never be recreated and I thought that preserving some semblance of a memory in such a watery medium would emphasize the intangible change that has taken place since the photograph. Growth, progress, picking up momentum throughout our lives (like water in a river) is something I find essential to the human purpose.

My initial fascination with this picture stemmed from the role of light and shadow within it. The impression that the figure is emerging from one thing into another is suspenseful, engaging. There are many different connotations to change in our lives and in this specific piece I wanted to neglect the fears and stresses and focus on the peace that can be found in accepting what is to come.

This triptych broaches a slightly different topic. Themes of change are still present, but as are more abstract concepts such as the manifestation of thoughts. Here the watercolor bubbles represent the lawlessness of our thought processes, whilst the harsh threaded lines make reference to more crystallized, structured thoughts. The way we change and grow whilst maintaining core values is shown in the contrasting black and watercolor.

Whilst in biology, we were studying sieve tubes and their role in water transportation. The images of these structures under the microscope fascinated me and I decided to translate the pattern into a piece. The message is one of dissonance in translation between people and within ourselves. Change calls for adaptation and this can take a toll on familiarity, whether this be in relation to the world around us or the internal conflicts we manage. The lines and thread that fail to connect represent this discord.
