         <title>1911-1912: Xinhai Revolution</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Xinhai Revolution was a revolt in China which overthrew the Qing dynasty and created a republic. Sun Yat-Sen and Yuan Shikai gained power in the new Republic of China, which was created by a hectic revolt.  This republic will then slowly start to fall apart and cause national disunity.</div>]]></description>

However, there was also a major earthquake and WW1 during this era, and opposition to democracy grew during this period as the government seemed to be corrupt.</div>]]></description>

This kicked off the great depression around the world, and Japan's economy also plummeted. The first part of the Showa period in Japan was characterized by an increase in militarism, fascism, and imperialism. These ideologies spread as a result of Japan's economic recession and led to Japan being isolated diplomatically from other world powers.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1931, Chiang Kai-Shek tried to increase Chinese influence in Manchuria, which was under significant Japanese influence. Without consent from the government, Japanese officers started conflict with the Chinese forces, claiming that the Chinese were to blame for an explosion on the railway lines. The city of Mukden and later the rest of Manchuria was quickly conquered by the Japanese, but the other world powers did not approve this and led to Japan leaving the League of Nations.</div>]]></description>

One night, Japanese patrols in Beijing demanded entry into the Chinese walled town of Wanping, but were denied access and a shot was heard. The two sides immediately started firing and more forces on both sides joined the fighting, starting the Second Sino-Japanese war.</div>]]></description>

After the city was occupied, Japanese forces started a mass killing of Chinese civilians, and many Chinese women were raped. The number of civilians killed in the incident remains disputed to this day, with estimates ranging from 20 to 400 thousand.</div>]]></description>

Japan tried to negotiate peace with the United States, but peace negotiations failed, so the Japanese decided to attack the United States at Pearl Harbor. The surprise attack was successful, and the USS Arizona was sunk, but this started US participation in World War 2 on the side of the Allies.</div>]]></description>

However, Japan still refused to surrender, so American generals started incendiary bombing without a strategic objective on Tokyo and other major Japanese cities. Thousands of Japanese people had died and the raid lowered Japanese morale, but Japan still refused to surrender.</div>]]></description>

         <title>August 6-9, 1945: Atomic Bombings of Japan</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>By July 1945, he United States created the world's first nuclear bombs as part of the Manhattan Project, led by Robert Oppenheimer. When Japan refused to surrender, nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 and on Nagasaki on August 9. The bombs caused massive destruction in both of the cities, and the Japanese government issued a statement to accept surrender one day after the Nagasaki bombing.</div>]]></description>

         <title>August 10-September 2, 1945: Japanese Surrender</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Japanese offered to surrender on August 10, 1945, and the terms of surrender were agreed with the Allies on August 14. Formal surrender ceremonies were done on September 2 aboard the USS Missouri, and the Allies agreed to accept the Japanese Emperor as sovereign if he is subject to the supreme commanders of the Allied Powers. The United States and the Soviet Union also agreed to divide Korea into two halves along the 38th parallel, resulting in the division of Korea that still continues today. </div>]]></description>

         <title>1948 - Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After World War 2, at Tokyo, Japan, the International Military Tribunals of the Far East hears the cases against 28 Japanese officials accused of war crimes. 25 were found guilty, of which seven were sentenced to death, two died during the trial, and one was declared insane. Many believed that Emperor Hirohito was also guilty for his actions during the war, but US authorities considered him as a symbol of national unity and conservatism in Japan and therefore was considered favorable to the US.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After the Communist forces won the Chinese civil war on the Mainland, Mao Zedong declared the People's Republic of China to be established. Many in the US believed that China became communist because Democrats were too soft on communism, starting a wave of anticommunist movements in the US. China then became allies with the Soviet Union and North Korea, and land reforms started in the Chinese countryside.</div>]]></description>
