Melinda faces the theme of loss of childhood innocence. I think this because we know that something bad happens at a party that Melinda went to before the school year started and whatever it was caused her to lose not only her childhood innocence but also herself and her friends. The only friend she had ending up dropping her later "Look, you can't eat lunch with me anymore. I'm sorry." (Anderson 107)
